This book is for the person who wants to shoot their movie yesterday, if not sooner.A nuts-and-bolts approach that, as the title suggests, keeps your heart as involved as your head. I don't mean in a new-agey way, I mean it keeps you connected, at every step, to WHY you're pushing so hard to make your movie. It's not for money or fame, it's because of the burning story you HAVE to tell right this second.Lots of checklists to keep you on track and remembering to enjoy the privilege you have to tell stories in this medium - but removing the idea that money is the barrier to entry. It isn't any more. Shoot it on your iphone, your car's rear camera, whatever it takes to make it. Creativity finds a way and Diane nurtures that concept wholeheartedly.A fast, inspiring read from a sassy Scottish lass - you'll enjoy every page.
I've read a lot of books on filmmaking, but this is the only one that is this ACTIONABLE. It literally gives you a step-by-step guide to writing/producing/directing a feature film (or any other filmed project you're working on), and Bell's voice makes the entire enterprise seem really POSSIBLE. If you're looking for something to light a fire under you and actually give you the tools you need to create the film you want to make, Shoot From the Heart should be kept close to your heart.
Diane Bell’s Shoot From The Heart is honest, practical, and inspiring. She demystifies the financial realities of independent filmmaking and breaks down the steps to take to make an independent feature. In addition to the nuts and bolts of directing and producing a feature, she also offers advice that can be applied broadly to being a successful filmmaker and artist. Shoot From The Heart lays out how you can shoot a feature and also offers strategies for building a long term, sustainable career as an artist and a filmmaker. Highly recommended!
Great book very practical!! So easy to read and very insightful and honest!! A must read for an inspiring film maker. Suitable for someone just starting off
There are plenty of good filmmaking books out there, but this one stands out because of its mix of practical advice married to how to think about low-budget indie filmmaking in a way that makes it much more likely you'll get over the finish line. The subtitle could be "How to Think Guerrilla Filmmaking and How to Actually Do It." Very worthwhile.
Very Inspiring book for the indie filmmaker. Diane Bell explains how to navigate the challenges of indie filmmaking. This was required reading for my low budget filmmaking class at UCLA.
If you're new to filmmaking or you just need a little push in the right direction, you should read this book!
There are plenty of books on making movies. I own quite a few of them. But in my opinion, Diane Bell’s SHOOT FROM THE HEART is the best guide available for someone working in the indie arena. I say this as a film school graduate and as someone who has had a feature film produced. The qualities of SHOOT FROM THE HEART are numerous: Bell writes beautifully (with a comedic touch). She speaks from experience (three films produced so far). She offers a complete 16-step approach from “Step 1. Develop a Singular Script†through “Step 16. Execute Your Distribution Plan.†The book’s organization is clear and meant to work as a checklist. In terms of detail, the book can’t be beat. Bell has the ability to get way down in the weeds…and still make it interesting. For example, in the section about the importance of getting feedback on the script, she suggests the type of readers you need—and why your mother might not be the best choice. She talks about the number of feedback givers she relies on, and she provides specific prompts that evoke useful feedback. She also identifies what constitutes a destructive feedback giver and what you should do when you encounter a bitter armchair critic who tries to destroy your work. She even handles the difficult matter of whether a script is over-developed or underdeveloped.Perhaps most important, Bell is truly encouraging. She acknowledges that producing a movie can be scary and that making it happen requires a great amount of hard work. But based on her experience, she assures novices that they can do it. While she acknowledges that her method isn’t the only way, she makes the case that her approach will get the job done. The key—as suggested in the title—is to pay attention to what one’s own heart is saying.
