Perfect for the occasional visitor to Brooklyn. Lots of recommended restaurants and shops. Well laid out with different sections of Brooklyn in separate chapters. Great addition to NYC guidebooks. Also, good for Brooklynites who want to learn more about different parts of their borough.
I was so excited for this book to be published that I pre-ordered the book as soon as Amazon advertised it. I really want to like this book – but alas I found it quite disappointing and lacking. I thought perhaps I was being a bit cynical and have put it aside from time to time thinking I might feel differently about it at a later date. The more I read it the more I realize I want to like it – I really want to but found it not worth the price I pay for it. As a seasoned Brooklyn visitor I was hoping this book would have new tips and insight into things I had not previously been aware of. Sadly this book is more of a slap on the back self congratulatory book for local insiders. Sure there are some good suggestions but anyone who is aware of the areas would realize there are much better choices often times right next door. More self-promotional for an elite few than a broad spectrum of things to do, new explorations and must see persons places and things throughout all the Brooklyn neighborhoods. Anyone interested in exploring the neighborhoods could find the same information plus a treasure trove of unmentioned things for free by using the Yelp app. - as well as a broader and better selection with honest reviews. Browse through the book for free at the library. Save your money and use Yelp.

Not what I wha hoping for, Was expecting more in regards to sights and restaurants.
As a Brooklyn resident, I skimmed this and instantly found so much misinformation I had to wonder if they even tried to have residents from the areas fact check the book. I think it's doing a huge disservice to the rich history of an area to throw out misinformation as if it's fact. Sentences like "Cobble Hill is named for the piles of cobblestones used as ballast for ships leaving the port of Red Hook..." which is completely false, should never have appeared in the book. Also the boundary lines they draw for the neighborhoods don't seem to be based on any facts or maps I've seen elsewhere. They're roughly accurate but should probably have left of the dividing lines which are again, based on nothing but their own whims. Also I would advice against getting any book that lists businesses. Businesses come, go, and change too frequently (especially in NYC) to trust any printed guidebook on the matter. Check Yelp for stuff like that and only get this book if you want a very general idea of what Brooklyn neighborhoods are like around the time the book was printed.
I like travel guides, but I am afraid with the introduction of Yelp and the likes, they are becoming truly obsolete.90% of this book are dedicated to restaurant, hotel and shopping recommendations. With the high turnover of such establishments, these recommendations can be useless in months. You'll be better off looking places up on Yelp. I did like the sights and event recommendations, as well as tidbits of historical facts (stress on tidbits).The publishers of this guide also invested in some illustrations. Charming, but unnecessary. Adds to the price (almost $20.00 list price for this tiny tome), but not the content.
This is a super attractive guide-book. It's just not as functional as it could have been. While this is still probably one of the best guidebooks to get for Brooklyn, I sincerely hope they make some improvements to the next release.It has a rigid binding that does not allow the pages to open flat. And all the maps are these really lovely hand-drawn maps, but there is not a single real map of Brooklyn included in this book. One only needs to glance at the map of Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights to see the limitations of that approach. How those two areas get combined in this book is an entirely separate problem. Those are the main things that kind of disappoint me about this guidebook.With any guidebook you are always going to have debates about what goes in and what gets left out. So I think this case is no different. I managed to find most of my favorite places were included here. But look at the short shrift given to Coney Island and Brighton Beach, once again combined even though they are completely different neighborhoods, and you will realize they chose to try to keep it lean. Sadly, a lot of really good places are going to have to be left out of a book like that.CONCLUSIONThere are not many guidebooks on Brooklyn and this one is probably a good option because of that. But I am hoping for a better edition next year.
