I downloaded this book as an audio file so I could listen while doing other things. I'm a 70-year-old physically disabled female, living alone with a cat (of course) and many would probably think I wouldn't like this book at all. It's a story about a recently-retired Marine, 38, divorced, and at loose ends. Until he goes to visit a dear friend in Marathon FL and decides to buy a boat and become a fishing/underwater photography guide. This is the prequel to Stinnett's "Fallen" series and apparently tells his readers the back stories of the main characters in those books. I haven't read the series yet but I certainly intend to! This is a good story, well-presented, feels authentic. There is some violence with an obvious hero; there is some sex but it's mostly implied with a wink and pulled curtains. The characters feel like real humans who do good things. And stupid things. And bad things. The narration on the audio file is clear and very well done. The male narrator even manages to imply a female voice without sounding patronizing or just plain dumb.Overall I've given this book 4 stars. I have no complaints about anything in or about the book, but I don't usually give 5 stars unless a book knocks my socks off (and I almost never wear socks).
I want to like this book, but it just didn't move. There is a chapter midway that gets rolling with the "action plot" of the book, and then at the 80% mark (I read on Kindle, so I know the precise spot) it picks up on that storyline again. The bad guy gets chased down then, and is taken out in a matter of two paragraphs. Very disappointing. Most of the book is Jesse McDermitt getting out of the Marines and adjusting to a new life. There is far more in the love-interest story than the action story, which are kept very separate. It's like reading two different books--no wait, three different books--woven around each other: the action story, the love story, and the I'm-out-of-the-service-now story. That third one doesn't do anything, and comprises at least half the book... it just traces through him buying a boat, interacting with folks, and drinking coffee on the bridge of his boat. Yes, I will try the next one, just in hopes it does better. It may well be that Book 1 was handled poorly in trying to establish the main character... so I'll give #2 a try and see if it does better. If not, I'm done with the series, and will be wagging my head at why so many people have given it 4 and 5 stars..... that's the real mystery.
This novel is the first in Jesse's timeline, but apparently the third or fourth book written in the series. And prequel it most certainly is, filling in the hero's back story. It also reflects the cover image of someone kicking back in a hammock. Stinnett, it seems, kicked back here and wrote a pretty lazy, laid-back yarn. It's just a series of events that takes Jesse from the Marines to Key West. If you're an ex-Leatherneck or a fan, you'll probably enjoy the plethora of Marine lore and experience. I'm not and I didn't. If you're into the toys Jesse's into—like half million dollar boats and guns and other gear—you'll enjoy all the discussion of them. I'm not and I didn't. If you're into fishing and diving... Well, you get the idea. Anyway, all of that bores me silly. I flipped through a lot of the over-information. True, there's one nasty antagonist for Jesse who appears three times. But Jesse dispatches the guy so easily each time, it's just a yawn. At no point is Jesse in trouble. What I'm saying is there's no plot to speak of, no suspense, no fun in reading it. Very little of the qualities I look for in books like this. Stinnett is clearly a capable writer and the success of this series hints that there's better material in his other books. So I think it's a mistake to offer this title as a low-priced entry point, even though it's the first in the timeline. It doesn't make a good pitch for getting into the series. This book is for folks who've already read some of the other Jesse adventures and want to learn more about the guy.
This book is not one I would normally read. But since the setting was the Florida keys I was interested, especially since I lived in Marathon for years. The book was worth the read since I learned a lot about guns and Marine slang. The storyline, a retired bad ass Marine turned charter captain, seemed to take second place to his ability to cope with no longer being on active duty. I was disappointed that the author was not more descriptive of the scenery, emotions of the characters and all the action scenes. My thoughts as I was reading one of the many action scenes was that the book reminded me of the old TV show, Dragnet, "just the facts mam, just the facts." The Florida keys are rich in history, beautiful turquoise water and full of unbelievably colorful characters. I wish the author had not been so stingy with his words. The story would not have kept my interest had I not actually lived where Jessie McDermott lived during the same time and could visually picture the events and surroundings. I'm hoping that Mr.Stinnet will get better as he continues with the series.IiInc
The story was good and the editing flawless. Yet there was a distinct lack of energy or life emanating from the words. It was told first person in a very dry manner. Too much was left for the reader’s imagination. In short, it was lacking hutzpah, no real excitement aside from the story itself. A painting that isn’t finished. A sound foundation of a story but lacking color and energy. I couldn’t help but feel the author was just going through the motions of relaying a tale in much the same way many kids do in school when given a writing assignment. It’s a good story, but a few embellishments would have added tremendous value to the reading experience. I wanted to feel the protagonist’s pain and anxiety when he left the Marine Corp; I didn’t. I wanted to feel the joy and triumph he felt when he won over the girl; I didn’t. And I especially wanted to feel his rejection when he was turned down at the end of the book, a poignant moment that many readers might relate to; I didn’t. In fact, I didn’t feel much of anything throughout the entire story. I gave it 4 stars for the story, not the lackluster reading experience.
