I am the sister-in-law of the Fire Captain who was killed in the Esperanza Fire, so I am very knowledgable about what really happened. John spent six years interviewing, researching, and and organizing this tragic and unbelievable incident. I have read the book twice so far and can verify the accuracy of its contents. I am pleased with the way that the book stays focused on the facts and is not filled with personal opinions. While readng The Esperanza Fire I found myself thinking back on that morning when the amber colored sky was raining ashes. It was like something out of an apocalyptic movie. John explains in the book moment by moment what had happened. He also includes information about the trial and his continual communications with the convicted murderer.The Esperanza Fire is an historic account of that horrible tragedy and reminds us to always remember the brave fire fighters who lost their lives and those who fought the fiery battle. Their lives and families lives were changed forever.
This book was hard to put down. Maclean thoroughly researched the incident and all the events that led up to the tragedy and eventual conviction of the person responsible. How he boiled down the thousands of pages of correspondence, interviews and official reports to an interesting and concise book is brilliant. This is absolutely a must read for anyone who has or is presently working in wildland fire management. I'm retired now, but was once a member of the wildland fire family, and it is a family for sure. The fatalities on this fire hit me quite hard. I've been on two fires where fatalities have occurred, one of those with four. Each fatal event on wildfires affects me greater as my years go on. My heart bleeds for those so cruelly touched by this fire.I was a crew boss on a fire in this area in 1996, have driven all the roads in and around the San Jacinto Ranger District, have hiked a trail or two there and thus am very familiar with the locations involved. The ability and precedence of convicting arsonists for murder is long overdue. I hope that it has provided a deterrent for potential arsonists in southern California. Hopefully some of them have read this book as well.I hope John Maclean will take up the task and write a book about the Yarnell Hill Fire. I can't think of anyone more qualified and proven than he. I've read all of his books and each one is better than the last. Each needs to be read by all of us in the family. Reading the reports and books like this are essential to reducing casualties in an increasingly dangerous activity.
Living in Idyllwild I found this quite absorbing particularly coming up on the 7th anniversary of this fire and in the interim having worked a few shifts at the burn unit the victims were flown to; was a new experience to me and while they were in very good hands it took just a glimpse at those w/ 40-50% burns to recognize the firefighters who made it that far did not stand a chance. 1st book I've read by this author, I am friends with captain Loutzenhiser's widow, Maria. This is a particularly difficult time of year for her & understandably so. I don't recall everything about the fire itself until the deaths of engine 57 crew as fires are not an infrequent occurrence here, it's accepted as part of living here such that longtime residents keep photos & documents ready to pack all year. It is a very small town however the author does take some poetic license in description of isolation from crime, while violent crime is rare property crime is not; that 'immunity' perception is held by the well-heeled who have 2nd homes here. This homicide hit close to home among longtime residents; we all know one another, at minimum casually, I grew up with Maria Loutzenhisers' sister and knew her family from childhood. As the daughter of an LAPD Sgt with whom we discussed legal matters endlessly I found this book of great interest when law enforcement stepped in, my dad served from late '40s to mid '70s, well before the era of 'endless appeals', I'm well acquainted w/surrounding cities including Cabazon, as a hospice RN we were not permitted to go there w/out another staff member. Sky high violent crime mainly from the meth addicts, it came as no surprise that this was Oylers stomping ground. Author displays insight into arsonist's who are caught far too infrequently. I am glad they apprehended & convicted this arsonist, he's exhibit A for a capital case and I hope it gave the families some sense that justice was served...Maria & I were discussing this book today, with exception of a few details she described it as accurate. The fact that she can talk about it amazes me, I do not know that I could ever get past the murder of a loved one and am thankful I was spared the knowledge that my father held a hazardous profession until after reading Wambaugh's 'The Onion Field' which occurred when my dad was LAPD. All in all a very well-written book re changes if firefighting policy. I did not realize they held the same level of micromanagement/blame game as law enforcement does...I realized how much had changed from a '97 evacuation to the Esperanza fire to our massive fire last July wherein my husband, our friend & I remained having a clear shot out of town as the route out had already burned. We were not forced to leave but in retrospect it was a decision based on hubris in our thinking we'd been through this many times & knew it all when fire can claim those who are well-equipped to deal w/ it.
I work as a member of CAL FIRE so first of all, it was weird reading a book that involves people I've worked with and/or know. The book itself is gripping and given my personal experience with wildland fires, I could empathize and imagine the scenario experienced by E57 and E3176. The writing is definitely oriented toward the lay person, but even as a firefighter, I was taken into the story and horror of the event. Though I have driven through that area many times, I never took the time to visit the actual fatality site, but now I will. Ironically, I read this book while assigned to the Eiler Fire where we had our own "fire storm"--albeit nothing nearly like that experienced by the leading engines of the Esperanza Fire--and I conveyed elements of the story to my firefighters and tried to learn what I could as well. Why? Triaging a structure for defense is one of the hardest things for me to do. It is inevitably a judgment call, despite the exhaustive (and therefore nearly unusable) checklists created for the purpose, and you won't know until afterward if you were "right." I believe the author did a good job of trying to distinguish fact from the inevitable department "politics" and ass-covering, and I learned a lot about the legislative history behind the current fear of incident commanders being potentially liable for fireline injuries and deaths. Overall an excellent book.
