In Ambition Redefined, Kathryn Sollmann examines what it means to be ambitious on your own terms. Not every woman aspires to the corner office with the highest title. Women find success in various ways, flexibility to care for children, while still remaining in the workforce. The importance of being able to support yourself and your family while continually saving and investing is so important. A must read for women at every stage of life because it's never too late to redefine yourself.

I read Ambition Redefined cover to cover and found it to be an insightful and compelling read. I wish I had had this book 15 years ago when I made the decision to leave the workforce to be a stay-at-home mom. It’s helpful to me now as I look to restart a brand management career. I’ve been recommending the book to friends/colleagues, especially those who have teenage daughters like mine who need to get the message that women should always work in a flexible way.

Ambition Redefined is an amazing resource. Not only do I think all women should read this book but men as well. It is an exceptional guide that not only brings to the forefront what women have been struggling with for ages but answers how to finally go up, over and around those walls that are blocking financial security.

As I read Ambition Redefined, I couldn't help thinking that every woman should have this book. I will give one to both of my daughters. It would also be a great gift for anyone graduating from high school or college.

What I liked most about this book is the Appendix where there are resources to look for work online and a guide to help you get your ducks inn a row if you are looking for flexible work. What I also liked about this book is that it speaks to a broad population. I'm 63 and at a flexible work crossroads after staying home with my kids.This book talks about women who have aging parents and/or a family. It talks about protecting ourselves from the unpredictable (i.e. economic changes, divorce, death, etc) and reminded me I made some choices after having my kids that would impact me financially and in terms of my sense of purpose after the kids were grown up.I saw those crossroads in my life where I decided not to work - and didn't fully consider what the consequences would be for me at this age. Hindsight is always 20/20 and the reason I raise this is because this book gave me insight I didn't have at the time.What I didn't like about the book was all the statistics and at times what I felt was judgmental nature of the author on women who choose to stay home with their families or not work for other reasons. I deducted a star for that. it felt wordy and repetitive in parts.Having said that, I think this is an excellent resource if you want to consider working and are lost about a plan for what to consider and resources to look at. The appendix is worth the price of the book as I'll be going through it systematically to help me redefine my ambition.

I am the sister-in-law of the Fire Captain who was killed in the Esperanza Fire, so I am very knowledgable about what really happened. John spent six years interviewing, researching, and and organizing this tragic and unbelievable incident. I have read the book twice so far and can verify the accuracy of its contents. I am pleased with the way that the book stays focused on the facts and is not filled with personal opinions. While readng The Esperanza Fire I found myself thinking back on that morning when the amber colored sky was raining ashes. It was like something out of an apocalyptic movie. John explains in the book moment by moment what had happened. He also includes information about the trial and his continual communications with the convicted murderer.The Esperanza Fire is an historic account of that horrible tragedy and reminds us to always remember the brave fire fighters who lost their lives and those who fought the fiery battle. Their lives and families lives were changed forever.

This book was hard to put down. Maclean thoroughly researched the incident and all the events that led up to the tragedy and eventual conviction of the person responsible. How he boiled down the thousands of pages of correspondence, interviews and official reports to an interesting and concise book is brilliant. This is absolutely a must read for anyone who has or is presently working in wildland fire management. I'm retired now, but was once a member of the wildland fire family, and it is a family for sure. The fatalities on this fire hit me quite hard. I've been on two fires where fatalities have occurred, one of those with four. Each fatal event on wildfires affects me greater as my years go on. My heart bleeds for those so cruelly touched by this fire.I was a crew boss on a fire in this area in 1996, have driven all the roads in and around the San Jacinto Ranger District, have hiked a trail or two there and thus am very familiar with the locations involved. The ability and precedence of convicting arsonists for murder is long overdue. I hope that it has provided a deterrent for potential arsonists in southern California. Hopefully some of them have read this book as well.I hope John Maclean will take up the task and write a book about the Yarnell Hill Fire. I can't think of anyone more qualified and proven than he. I've read all of his books and each one is better than the last. Each needs to be read by all of us in the family. Reading the reports and books like this are essential to reducing casualties in an increasingly dangerous activity.

Living in Idyllwild I found this quite absorbing particularly coming up on the 7th anniversary of this fire and in the interim having worked a few shifts at the burn unit the victims were flown to; was a new experience to me and while they were in very good hands it took just a glimpse at those w/ 40-50% burns to recognize the firefighters who made it that far did not stand a chance. 1st book I've read by this author, I am friends with captain Loutzenhiser's widow, Maria. This is a particularly difficult time of year for her & understandably so. I don't recall everything about the fire itself until the deaths of engine 57 crew as fires are not an infrequent occurrence here, it's accepted as part of living here such that longtime residents keep photos & documents ready to pack all year. It is a very small town however the author does take some poetic license in description of isolation from crime, while violent crime is rare property crime is not; that 'immunity' perception is held by the well-heeled who have 2nd homes here. This homicide hit close to home among longtime residents; we all know one another, at minimum casually, I grew up with Maria Loutzenhisers' sister and knew her family from childhood. As the daughter of an LAPD Sgt with whom we discussed legal matters endlessly I found this book of great interest when law enforcement stepped in, my dad served from late '40s to mid '70s, well before the era of 'endless appeals', I'm well acquainted w/surrounding cities including Cabazon, as a hospice RN we were not permitted to go there w/out another staff member. Sky high violent crime mainly from the meth addicts, it came as no surprise that this was Oylers stomping ground. Author displays insight into arsonist's who are caught far too infrequently. I am glad they apprehended & convicted this arsonist, he's exhibit A for a capital case and I hope it gave the families some sense that justice was served...Maria & I were discussing this book today, with exception of a few details she described it as accurate. The fact that she can talk about it amazes me, I do not know that I could ever get past the murder of a loved one and am thankful I was spared the knowledge that my father held a hazardous profession until after reading Wambaugh's 'The Onion Field' which occurred when my dad was LAPD. All in all a very well-written book re changes if firefighting policy. I did not realize they held the same level of micromanagement/blame game as law enforcement does...I realized how much had changed from a '97 evacuation to the Esperanza fire to our massive fire last July wherein my husband, our friend & I remained having a clear shot out of town as the route out had already burned. We were not forced to leave but in retrospect it was a decision based on hubris in our thinking we'd been through this many times & knew it all when fire can claim those who are well-equipped to deal w/ it.

I work as a member of CAL FIRE so first of all, it was weird reading a book that involves people I've worked with and/or know. The book itself is gripping and given my personal experience with wildland fires, I could empathize and imagine the scenario experienced by E57 and E3176. The writing is definitely oriented toward the lay person, but even as a firefighter, I was taken into the story and horror of the event. Though I have driven through that area many times, I never took the time to visit the actual fatality site, but now I will. Ironically, I read this book while assigned to the Eiler Fire where we had our own "fire storm"--albeit nothing nearly like that experienced by the leading engines of the Esperanza Fire--and I conveyed elements of the story to my firefighters and tried to learn what I could as well. Why? Triaging a structure for defense is one of the hardest things for me to do. It is inevitably a judgment call, despite the exhaustive (and therefore nearly unusable) checklists created for the purpose, and you won't know until afterward if you were "right." I believe the author did a good job of trying to distinguish fact from the inevitable department "politics" and ass-covering, and I learned a lot about the legislative history behind the current fear of incident commanders being potentially liable for fireline injuries and deaths. Overall an excellent book.

A tome this most certainly is! Harry Potter Page to Screen: The Complete Filmmaking Journey is a behemoth of a book, and I had not expected it to be this huge (not that I'm complaining). It is an oversized hardcover with an embossed photograph of Hogwarts on the cover. It looks like a magickal volume and in a way it is, for it captures all of the magic of the Harry Potter movies, from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone all the way to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part Two. Any self-avowed fan of the HP stories and movies will treasure this beautiful volume filled with movie lore, and many more.The first color photograph one comes across as one flips the book open is a full size portrait of Albus Dumbledore, Headmaster of Hogwarts (Michael Gambon, who played Dumbledore in HP films 3-8). His face expresses both concern and puzzlement, and it is almost as if he is there to welcome readers on a journey of knowledge and discovery which is what this book ultimately rewards the reader with. Flip to the next page, and one's attention is captured by a double-page (full spread) painting of Hogwarts, majestic in all its splendor, though details are rather fuzzy. If you've ever wondered how the cast was put together, the process by which the directors for the movies were picked, etc. then this wonderful book answers all these questions and more. These details are enhanced by the hundreds of photographs that are found throughout the book, and what makes these pictures all the more extraordinary and valuable to the discerning reader is the fact that many of them were taken on set, during the making of the films, and apart from the photographs there are also full-color paintings in glorious detail. As a dragon fan myself, I was positively enraptured by the concept art of Paul Gatling depicting the mighty Hungarian Horntail in all its wondrous glory, which dare I say surpassed even the beauty of the dragon depicted on film? These are not minuscule drawings, but large-scale drawings in fold-out form. Other magical creatures get their share in this book such as the centaurs, dear old Buckbeak, the thestrals, the dementors, the process of transformation of Remus Lupin into a werewolf and many more. Be still my beating heart!Remember all those newspaper headlines from The Daily Prophet, the Quibbler editions, and the Wanted Posters? They are depicted here in detail and also in the case of The Quibbler, in color! Ever wondered about the inspiration for those Death Eater's Masks? Its covered here in full-color. The significant places in the world of Harry Potter - Hogwarts, Diagon Alley (loved the map), the Burrow, Hagrid's Hut, the Forbidden Forest, and many more are also given descriptions and explanations in this magnificent volume.As I continue reading through this tome, I have found some little things to gripe about - certain characters, albeit minor ones, are not really given any coverage, just a mere mention. Remember the ghost that haunts the abandoned toilet in Chamber of Secrets, i.e. Moaning Myrtle? Just a mention and that's it. I would have loved to see at least some description of the filming of the bathroom scene in HP and the Goblet of Fire in which Moaning Myrtle makes another appearance and helps Harry puzzle out the riddle, but no such luck. The book does however go into detail about the second task and the glorious underwater lake scene in Goblet of Fire, and how the lifecasts were conceived and made. But poor Hedwig gets left out here - except for a brief mention on p.238 and concept art depicting Harry and Hedwig overlooking Hogwarts.Btw, for those who are wondering about how this compares to Harry Potter Film Wizardry, I'd say they are both complementary (I own a copy of HP Film Wizardry) to each other. While Page to Screen provides more details on the movie-making process and covers just about everything (I say just about as there are some things not covered), Film Wizardry provides more of an overview with many fun elements thrown in for devoted fans such as the various foldouts and inserts. For example, in HP Film Wizardry, readers will get a chance to peruse a copy of the Marauder's Map, Harry's acceptance letter to Hogwarts, a catalogue from Borgin and Burke's, stickers in the Advanced Potion-Making pamphlet, two boxes of treats (sans the treats) from Honeydukes of Hogsmeade (you can tear them out and fold them into actual treat boxes, not that I would!), a Quidditch World Cup Programme, a copy of the Yule Ball Programme, Educational Decree No. 29, a product catalogue of Weasley's Wizard Wheezes, and a Ministry of Magic ID card. Such goodies are not to be found in Page to Screen, so I'd definitely recommend getting both books. I've frequently found myself reading both together, and comparing notes.My one complaint here is the absence of an Index - how could they have produced such a wonderful companion book to the movies and not have an index to help readers look up any detail that springs to mind? I can't fathom it, but I envision myself spending lots of quality time enjoying the delights of this book, so I shall not let this trouble me too much:) In fact, I am sorely tempted to purchase another book to keep as a collector's item as I can see myself thumbing through this copy until it becomes dog-eared! This is a beautiful volume of substance for any fan of the HP books and movies.

 This book exceeded all my expectations, and it certainly befits the Harry Potter film saga.This is a large format 532-page hardcover. It's so huge and hefty so you can't really hold it for reading without resting it on something, like your lap. The cover is beautifully designed with an embossed title and a window looking at Hogwarts.There are three parts to the book. The first is "The Making of Harry Potter" and covers the complete film making process of all the seven Harry Potter titles. The second is "The Art of Harry Potter" and that covers the characters, locations, creatures and artifacts. The third is the epilogue. It took me several days to finish reading.I want to make special mention on the layout of the content which is beautiful and thoughtful. All the stunning photos and art are published at high resolution. On some pages, there are illustrations or patterns printed on a thin gloss that gives the page a slight shine as you flip over. The text is set on light cream coloured paper. There's an illustrated drop cap that starts every chapter, and every section in the chapter ends with a nice symbol. Even the choice of typography used is excellent.The first part featuring the film production stories are a joy to read. It starts right at the beginning, from getting the copyright to make the films, to casting and filming right to the last day. There are lots of interesting details to read about, such as interactions between the actors and film crew, how the stage and props are made and the challenges and considerations of filming.You read about how the children were like deers in the headlight on their first day of filming. There were extensive laughing, constant looking into the camera. As you read along towards the last film, you know how much they have grown as actors.The writing is wonderful. The author Bob McBabely is a master at weaving the stories, controlling the flow and transition from one section to another. There's a part where Emma Watson admits to having a crush on Tom Felton and in the next sentence Tom Felton says,"Poor Emma. Of course I knew; it was obvious. But I never mentioned it.". There amount of research and interviews done must be incredible. Every film crew mentioned are given introductions and a thorough background on what they do.The stories on set designs are really interesting. You can find out how sets are constructed, like Hogswarts and all the different rooms and secret locations. I thought the underwater scene in Goblet of Fire was totally CGI but it turned out that Daniel Radcliffe actually had to swim, while holding his breath, and act in a water tank. And of course, there are details on how that water tank was built, with heaters, bacteria-killing UV lights, and the little things that don't cross our minds.The second part of the book is sort of like the encyclopaedic look at the characters, locations and artifacts. There are staff commentary on everything. You can look into the different classrooms of professors, read The Daily Prophet, check out The Weasleys' tent at the Quidditch World Cup, marvel at the different broomstick designs, etc. Amazing and detailed photos of the sets fill the pages.There are concept art in the book as well, and they are great. There are designs for Dobby, dragons, props, environment art, etc. This is the only book where you can see them because there aren't any Harry Potter art books.This book is highly recommended to fans of the Harry Potter films. It gives a new sense of appreciation for the film and the people who worked behind the scenes. It's something you'll want to make the magic last a bit longer.- Compared to Harry Potter Film Wizardry -Harry Potter Film Wizardry is like a condensed version of Page to Screen. Much of the content in terms of text and photos are duplicated. There are some information and photos that are not included in Page to Screen though. That book is designed like a scrapbook with little goodies -- booklets, stickers, maps, even Harry's letter of acceptance to Hogwarts, etc - attached to the pages. The layout is nice, magazine-like.If you're just looking to get one book, then there's no doubt about choosing Harry Potter Page to Screen. If you're the true blue Harry Potter fan, then of course you'll want both books.
