The descriptions for why argument section questions are right basically said, it's right because it's right. Not helpful. Logic games help was good.

Only useful for setting up games. Anything else, it basically just restates the stimulus and then tells you it's right because it's right. It does not break down why the answer is correct from the question stem or question type.

I briefly reviewed the explanations for Logical Reasoning questions (aka Arguments) and can't help agreeing they could have done more. For many questions, they simply write "Yes." or "No." when explaining an answer choice (followed by a brief explanation), but what they don't do is really get into the logic behind the questions in terms of a student's mindset - why a particular answer choice might have been tempting, but is still wrong in the end.Much of what's necessary to achieve real improvement on the LSAT comes from engaging in a detailed review of EVERYTHING you get wrong and/or have difficulty with. Here are some tips to help you review:* Look at exactly what caused your mistakes. Was it something in the stimulus or the answer choices?* If it was in the stimulus, was it your approach to reading the passage that was ineffective or incorrect, or was it something in the stimulus that you misunderstood?* If it was in the answer choices, what was it in the incorrect answer choice you chose, determine what it was about the wrong answer choice that tempted you - then, identify what made it wrong in the end.* If there was something in the correct answer that made it seem unappealing, figure out what it was, and figure out what made it correct in the end.By doing this over and over, you'll start to see patterns in how the test-makers create tempting incorrect answer choices. You'll see different types of techniques they use. These were my guiding principles when I created my own explanations for over 1,000+ LSAT questions, many of which were for PrepTests 62-71. (You'll find them on my website.)Please feel free to get in touch if you need anything. I'm always happy to help students who are studying for the LSAT.

Ghosts of the Tsunami: Death and Life in Japan's Disaster Zone, by Richard Lloyd Parry

Review

"An eerie, brushstroked evocation . . . A strikingly vivid, even visceral writer, Lloyd Parry sweeps away distractions . . . to offer tightly focused and consuming human stories . . . Lloyd Parry is uncommonly sensitive to all such spirits, and in the tsunami he has found a horrifying metaphor for those subliminal forces that swirl underneath the manicured surfaces of Japan . . . The ghosts that hover just above his charged and elemental pages are a reminder of how much this land of order remains ruled by things that can't be seen." ―Pico Iyer, The New York Times Book Review"A lively and nuanced narrative by the British journalist Richard Lloyd Parry, the longtime and widely respected correspondent in Tokyo for the London Times. Though in part he presents vivid accounts of what was a very complex event, with this book he wisely stands back . . . to consider the essence of the story . . . Heartbreaking." ―Simon Winchester, The New York Review of Books"Powerful . . . Lloyd Parry's account is truly haunting, and remains etched in the brain and heart long after the book is over." ―Lisa Levy, New Republic"Richard Lloyd Parry wrote People Who Eat Darkness, easily one of the best works of true crime in the past decade . . . [Ghosts of the Tsunami is] a stunning portrait of devastation and its aftermath." –Kevin Nguyen, GQ"A wrenching chronicle of a disaster that, six years later, still seems incomprehensible . . . Any writer could compile a laundry list of the horrors that come in the wake of a disaster; Lloyd Parry's book is not that . . . Lloyd Parry writes about the survivors with sensitivity and a rare kind of empathy; he resists the urge to distance himself from the pain in an attempt at emotional self-preservation." –Michael Schaub, NPR.org"Remarkably written and reported . . . a spellbinding book that is well worth contemplating in an era marked by climate change and natural disaster." –Kathleen Rooney, The Chicago Tribune"Vivid, suspenseful . . . [Lloyd Parry] re-creates the tragic events in a cinematic style reminiscent of Truman Capote's In Cold Blood . . . There's a harrowing intimacy here, as he brings us into families senseless with grief, the desire for a justice that eludes them . . . Lloyd Parry's elegant, clear-eyed prose allows him to circle ever closer to the heart of Okawa's mystery . . . Part detective story, part cultural history, part dirge, Ghosts of the Tsunami probes the scars of loss and the persistence of courage in the face of unspeakable disaster." ―Hamilton Cain, Minneapolis Star Tribune"[Lloyd Parry's] writing is always graceful and filled with compassion." ―Adam Hochschild, The American Scholar"[The book’s] testimonies are almost unbearably moving . . . In an understated way, Ghosts of the Tsunami is not only a vivid, heartfelt description of the disaster, but a subtle portrait of the Japanese nation." ―Craig Brown, The Mail on Sunday“The stories that Lloyd Parry gives voice to are not only deeply personal but . . . accompanied with essential historical and cultural context that enable the reader to understand the roles of death, grief, and responsibility in Japanese culture―and why some survivors may always remain haunted.” ―Amanda Winterroth, Booklist (starred review)“A brilliant, unflinching account . . . Singular and powerfully strange . . . It is hard to imagine a more insightful account of mass grief and its terrible processes. This book is a future classic of disaster journalism, up there with John Hersey’s Hiroshima.” ―Rachel Cooke, The Guardian“Lloyd Parry combines an analytical dissection of the disaster in all its ramifying web of detail with a novelist’s deft touch for characterization . . . Heartrending . . . it will remain as documentation to the inestimable power of nature and the pitiful frailty of our own.” ―Roger Pulvers, The Japan Times "Pensive travels in the wake of one of the world's most devastating recent disasters, the Tohoku earthquake of 2011 . . . The author's narrative is appropriately haunted and haunting . . . A sobering and compelling narrative of calamity." –Kirkus Reviews

Harrowing and heartbreaking, beautifully written without sensationalism or any easy answers to the question "Why?", this book was impossible for me to put down. One classic tale as told to its author by a local priest, of the Buddha himself centuries ago having been verbally unable to explain the Why of death to a young mother grieving her child, is so spare and quietly dignified that I re-read it several times and highlighted the portion where the woman is gently led to come to her own conclusions. As must we all.

This is really two books. The first 2/3 of this book is comprised of spell-binding accounts from survivors and families who lived through this disastrous tsunami. The book focuses on individuals in the small towns of the area, and how after years of routine earthquake and tsunamis, people had become complaisant. They assumed their sea walls would protect them. But the tsunami made short work of those barriers. These coastal towns are surrounded by protective hillsides on the landward side, and the people who survived are the ones who ran (or drove) like hell to get up there. Seconds mattered. People who paused to grab a phone or a precious family memento were swept away. Many were never found, either swept far out to sea or buried deep in the miles of mud that coated the towns when the water returned to the ocean. The final part of the book examines one particularly poignant story: the elementary school in a small town, where the students and teachers perished for lack of a coherent disaster plan, even though earthquakes and tsunamis are common in this area. The school administrators in charge wasted precious time dithering about what to do and then led the children down into the path of the oncoming waters rather than up the hill right behind the school. They all died. This is followed by a heartbreaking coverage of the government's failure to help the people afterwards. Local officials twisted themselves into pretzels to avoid taking any responsibility for these dead children and teachers, fearing not just the monetary penalty but the shame of their own failure. Meanwhile the devastated families (many of whom had lost everything) were living in crappy trailers, unable to make a living of any kind (their businesses were gone). The government did very little to help. They were abandoned by all the authority figures in whom they'd had faith, paid taxes to, elected, and trusted. The only real help they got was from each other. Eventually some of the families brought a suit against the school, if only to bring this shameful story to light, for the sake of all families who trust that their children are being well cared for when they send them off to school every morning. This part of the story is still unfolding. It is sensitively told. We are given the facts of what happened, but also the author includes insights into the attitudes and traditions at work. He has lived for many years in Japan and understands the culture and the people. As an American, I was ashamed of the way the US abandoned the people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina. It was shocking to me to discover that the same kind of failure can happen in another "First World" country.

Wonderfully descriptive and empathetic, Richard Lloyd Parry brings a lucid, warm writing style to bring to life the pain and horror of the tsunami. His understanding of the juxtaposition of Japan's cultural appreciation of nature and the destruction that it brought is chilling and beautiful. The author places apt criticism in the cultural flaws that added to the death toll, while clearly respecting the best of what the country offers.A wonderfully constructed work.

Excellent examination of the East Japan Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami by focusing on the tragedy of Okawa Elementary School in the Ishinomaki City area. 73 of the 74 school students who died as a,result of the Tsunami were at Okawa. Powerful story! Very enlightening reading about the disaster and about Japanese Society in general. I have a better understanding about Japanese Culture after reading this book.

Powerful, poignant, well-researched and beautifully written. It sheds light on the impact the tsunami had on several of the families in its path, and opens western eyes to the story of Okawa Elementary School and the children lost there. I couldn’t put it down.

Just finished reading this amazing book; couldn’t put it down. Mr. Perry did a brilliant job in respecting the horror that occurred and explaining each account in great detail. These officials need to be in prison especially the principal and Mr. “Mentally challenged” Endo. Nearly an hour to escape and that was a massive failure. These kids were in their care; they should have been kept safe. Horrific negligence! That their stupid pride, denial, fear of public embarrassment, and old ways led to the deaths of the most innocent of all; children. The earth started the tragedy but humans made it worse. They will have to face their maker eventually in atonement! My heart aches for all those affected by this tragedy! I hope that this book gets made into a documentary or actual film by National Geographic, it’s a story that deserves to be told.

I enjoyed the book a lot because it described the experiences of the residents, the community during the earthquake. The children's school where most of the kids who could have been saved by common sense died. So, the principal was on trial but he escaped the judicial system and so with some teachers. The citizens could hear the devastation of the tsunami- while the water flowed it carried building structures, boats, human remains/human body parts and tragically childrens remains/childrens body parts. There was violent crackling, breaking, bursting, etc. Silence was impossible. The book brought me to this tragedy. I'm happy that I purchased this book but very sad with the loss of the kids lives too soon.

Review

“Martínez dives into the underworld of his subjects, navigating barrios that police won’t enter, spending days and nights with gang members. His methods resemble war reporting and his prose is cinematic … The collection’s strength lies in his ability to write the hell out of his material. Like Katherine Boo’s Behind the Beautiful Forevers and Adrian Nicole LeBlanc’s Random Family, it skimps on statistics and analysis, instead relying on description alone to create a world that captures the reader and doesn’t let her go. One of the stories, ‘El Niño Hollywood’s Death Foretold,’ evokes Gabriel García Márquez’s Chronicle of a Death Foretold. Like the beloved Colombian writer, Martínez pens scenes that are suspenseful, moving, and vivid.” —New Republic “Martínez is a gifted storyteller with an astute, observant eye and a voice that beckons to be followed … A History of Violence is a necessary read, especially for US government officials crafting immigration policy against migrants and refugees from the region. It sheds light on why so many are braving the treacherous trek through Mexico to reach the United States.”—Los Angeles Review of Books“Martínez’s credentials for writing about this ignored human tide are impeccable: his first book, The Beast, drew on eight trips clinging to the roof of the infamous migrants’ train through Mexico, chronicling their desperation in grippingly graphic detail. His new book, A History of Violence, takes a step back to explore what the migrants heading to the US are running away from … the unflinching cameos it paints offer a chilling portrait of corruption, unimaginable brutality and impunity.” —Financial Times “If you take just one book to Central America on holiday, don't pick this one. Oscar Martinez has written a punishing account of the lives of the poor in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. Melding acuity and anger, he unveils the scary realities of organised crime … Mr Martinez deserves credit for bringing it so effectively to life.” —Economist “As the current wave of US Immigration and Customs raids authorised by President Obama deports Latino migrants, and Donald Trump boosts his election campaign with promises to build a wall along the US–Mexican border, Martínez endeavours to explain why, for many Central Americans of the northern triangle, returning home is a death sentence.” —Independent “Ripped from the headlines, these are powerful stories of Central America’s chaotic and bloody present, sure to raise awareness among a broad audience of North Americans, whom Martínez refuses to let off the hook. ‘The solution?’ he asks. ‘It’s up to you.’” —Library Journal “In Spanish, the tradition of the crónica is in-depth testimonial reportage blended with personal essay, and Martínez is a worthy inheritor. Martínez’s work conveys an intimate knowledge of the social and criminal ecosystem—both macro-level context and telling minutiae. But because he isn’t afraid to follow dangerous paths, the result are jewels with moments of intense emotion presented against a historical background that contemplates military, social, economic, religious, psychosclogical and all sorts of other factors … I am in awe of Martínez’s commanding style. ” —Ilan Stavans, In These Times “El Salvador’s best chronicler of this profound crisis is Óscar Martínez, a journalist based in San Salvador. Martínez has dedicated his career to documenting how the matrix of poverty, instability, and narcotrafficking has transformed the lives and prospects of Central Americans. As a writer, he’s a committed, old-school social realist, and traveled with migrants on their deadly northward route for his previous book about Central American migration, The Beast. His methods in A History of Violence are equally painstaking.” —Caille Millner, New Inquiry “Agonizing stories … [Martínez] urges readers to understand what Central Americans are going through and what compels them to seek refuge in the United States.” —Ramón Rentería, El Paso Times “Dives deep to the problems driving the region's violence and impunity … If The Beast was a look at the dangers of the journey, A History of Violence focuses on why people take it to begin with.” —Jared Goyette, PRI’s The World “Succeeds in fostering a better understanding of Central America’s crisis of violence and the resulting surge in migration. By itself, such understanding cannot bring about the peaceful future that Martínez clearly hopes for. But if his work raises greater awareness of the situation in the region, and spurs at least some readers into action, it will have accomplished its purpose. A History of Violence is a timely publication, and not only because of the ongoing exodus from the isthmus. The new US president’s policy agenda portends to have an unprecedented impact on migration and security policies in the Western Hemisphere. The ability to step back, reflect, and stand with vulnerable populations suddenly seems more critical than Martínez may have imagined when he penned these chronicles.” —Sonja Wolf, Current History “In this collection, Martinez, a journalist whose acerbic prose enlivens its dire subjects, covers stories that illuminate why so many Central Americans are willing to risk their lives to cross the border to the United States (and why, instead of calling them illegal or undocumented, we should be calling them refugees).”—Mauro Javier Cardenas, The Millions “A History of Violence is not simply about storytelling, and despite the gruesome subject matter, is certainly not sensationalist journalism … Óscar Martínez is a passionately engaged reporter who goes under the surface to get to the truth.”—Ramor Ryan, TeleSur “No place is dangerous enough to quell Martínez’s hunger for the truth, as the intrepid newshound sniffs around in occupied prisons, grim police stations, hellish whorehouses, desolate crack dens, isolated ranches and battered barrios, all the locales omitted from the tourism brochures. To understand how corruption operates in Central America, Martínez goes to where it operates … gritty journalism.” —Hector Luis Alamo, Latino Rebels “Reading Salvadoran journalist Óscar Martínez’s nonfiction portrait of violence in Central America, it seems fantastically lucky for all of us that he’s still alive … The reporting is an act of courage; the book is a plea for comprehension of the terror that drives people from Central America to the United States … Martínez’s portrait of Central America as killing field is a plea not only for comprehension of immigrants’ race for the border but also for empathy.” —Nancy Nusser, Texas Observer“Martínez draws readers into this complex narrative by alternating between a panoramic social sweep and the beleaguered lives of civilians, victims, gang members, and cops, capturing the multilayered nature of a place whose indigenous traditions are being brutalized by modern criminals who commit murder casually … Smart, angry immersive journalism from an author who warrants wider readership on this side of the border.”—Kirkus “Martínez tenaciously reports piece by piece on the accretion of gang-related violence besetting El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala … Martínez's reporting reveals shocking failures of the state—particularly of police and courts—but he avoids tidy lessons, preferring to let the intractable issues stand in all their cold brutality.” —Publishers Weekly “A History of Violence … stays close to the lives of gang members, victims of violence, and the quixotic public officials who try to offer some answers in El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala … Martínez avoids the literature’s usual magnification of criminals’ power and pays attention to the fluid alliances and personal relations that determine, as one Honduran intelligence office puts it, ‘who’s in charge now.’”—Pablo Piccato, Public Books “A haunting portrait of a tragic, complicated part of the world.” —Shelf Awareness

As a major fan of Oscar Martinez's journalism I was simply counting the days for this books release once I got my hands on it I cracked the book open and I began yet another literary journey into the darkness that has engulfed Central America. The book for those of you who haven't read it is most definitely not for the faint of heart lots of depiction of violent crimes such as homicides. At times I often found myself setting the book down in order to not lose my full faith in humanity but my faith however remained thanks to journalistic heroism of Oscar Martinez who constantly puts his own life at risk while covering events in Latin America. One of the most striking aspects of this particular book is that Oscar Martinez decided to center part of the book that takes place in his native El Salvador around a single individual know as El Niño Hollywood or El Kid Hollywood. Quite possibly one of the most interesting real life characters in modern literary history a notorious Mara Salvaturcha hitman turned state's witness for the government who often describes his claimed murders in a casual manner. I never thought that I could feel for someone as malevolent as this cat but thanks to Oscar Martinez immersive writing I found myself empathizing to a certain degree with The Kid. All in all this book is an excellent depiction of crime , destruction , and the corruption of both human nature and the state. Long live Oscar Martinez!!Tips for Taking on this Book1. Read The Beast by Oscar Martinez first it's technically the spiritual predecessor of this book . The book will also allow you to get used to Oscar Martinez writing style which is an immersive one and immediately places the reader into the action taking place. After which Oscar Martinez gives the reader some background over the situation at hand as the chapter continues.2. Brush up on your Central American Geography the book includes a map of Central American countries and the states that compose them. I find that it would have been super helpful if the publisher had placed the exact geographic location of all of the cities that are depicted in the book.3. Highly recommend this book to anyone who's into Criminal Justice or human migration patterns. Also if you are a fan of The Wire or any other cerebral cop shows you'll probably enjoy the hell out of this book. Oscar Martinez's writing is similar to that of David Simon's and Ed Burns writing on the show in which you are usually thrust into the action and are given background as the episode ensues.

People who are running for their lives from Guatemala and Honduras and El Salvador aren't criminals. They are tying to escape criminality. They are desperate. They are true refuges --and this book illustrates that point beautifully.

Excellent! Americans should read this book for a greater understanding of how the U.S. has contributed to the mess in Central America and at our southern border. We must help Mexico deal with the problems not build a wall!

I don't want to leave a review. I just want to close this fine book and read another in my library. But Amazon won't let me get off of the review train.

Got this for a law enforcement class. Interesting read.

I live in the savior and this book blew my mind. I highly recommebd the book. It is a great translation.

This is a powerful read.

#3,291 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I love psychological thrillers and haven't read one that I haven't liked - even if I didn't like how the story progressed or ended. Until now. This book was so dry to me. I could not become emotionally attached or relate to any of the chsrscters. After reading the whole book I still feel like I barely know anything about any of the characters. The descriptions of them and their actions were so vague and plain that they never felt like real people. I didn't get sucked in and lost in their world the way I do with other books. Many questions were left unanswered and not in the good way that makes you think and fill in the blanks with your own made up scenarios. It was like reading a newspaper about a historical crime where the journalist didn't have much info and you think "this could be interesting but it's so blah that I'ok forget about it in five minutes anyway." The characters and plot progression could have been a lot better. There was a lot of unnecessary information too - as if it was filler info. Not enough to tell you more about who these people are or why it was even relevant to the story. I thought I would be angry with the nanny, and upset about the children dying, and feel heartbroken for the parents, but this book left me emotionless. I wouldn't recommend it.

An interesting read. Please do not buy the hype. It will entertain for an afternoon, but it is not some stunningly great novel-of-the-year. Truly suffers from overpraise. Decent Summer or rainy-Wednesday activity.

The baby is dead. We know that from the opening sentence. And so the focus will inevitably be connecting the dots between how Louise, the seemingly perfect nanny, could be responsible for such a horrible crime.Unsatisfied with life as a stay-at-home-mom, Myriam returns to work at a local law firm. With Myriam and her husband Paul both working, they decide to hire a nanny to watch their children, Mila and Adam.At first, Louise seems like a godsend: not only is she wonderful with the children, but she cleans the house daily and doesn't seem to mind when Myriam and Paul are increasingly absent. There are little signs early on that there's something slightly off about Louise—a vague sense of menace, a cool indifference—but these are only apparent to us, the reader, at least in the beginning. The Perfect Nanny is a character-focused psychological thriller that smartly addresses universal themes ranging from motherhood and domesticity to class and race. It explores the increasingly uncomfortable power structure between Louise and the parents, and the passive aggressiveness that mounts on both sides is downright uncomfortable.I'm struggling with how to rate this one—it's really between a 3 and a 4 for me. The writing is solid and the subject matter is interesting; and I'm always appreciative of a literary psychological thriller. But I never felt like I couldn't put it down or like I just had to know what would happen next.

This was a compelling, quick read that in addition to its thriller aspects really had some interesting perspective on the wide-ranging class issues at play in the relationship between the nanny and her employers. Both sides are represented with complexity; despite some bad acts on both sides (some worse than others), all characters are sympathetic in some ways. The author has a great eye for tiny details about everyday life, which often highlight the social hierarchy in the house even as the parents try to show how egalitarian they are to the nanny. My only complaint would be that the English translation sometimes sounds like a translation--certain phrases in dialogue are awkward, and if you know some French you can sort of imagine what the original dialogue probably said and imagine how it could have been translated more naturally. I translate a lot in my job, so maybe I'm more aware of this and it wouldn't bother others as much. In any case, I enjoyed the book and didn't want to put it down.

While the book is well written it is amazingly down/depressing and completely unsatisfying in every way. While there can obviously be no reasonable explanation for such a horrendous act, the author continuously teases that there is something to be understood about the Nanny that will subsequently be explained, other than a stock mental break down explaining very little. Please be aware there are no great reveals or insights coming and don't read this unless you want to be completely unsatisfied and depressed at the same time.

It isn't as good as I expected. I did see the author raised a social issue. And we understand that there should be a stronger social support system for the people who live on the margin of subsistence. But how to screen for mental health issue, to make sure every nanny is and will be stable. It's not anyone's fault, surely the author tried to depict Louise a victim also by her situation, still not every desperate person kills little children. Also, the transition of the nanny from a diligent worker to a murderer wasn't all that convincing. She didn't seem to be a psychopath in the beginning, but gradually was losing her mind, refusing the help offered to her by her employer ?Perhaps, the author meant to throw a question/ problem, with a warning that this nightmare could happen to any parents.

It was a well written story about a poor, single French woman who becomes a nanny; she is unskilled, uneducated and does not fit in anywhere. She is depressed and tries to worm her way into an immigrant family. She becomes very useful to them putting on parties for their friends and going on a vacation with them. She has no other friends and cannot fit in with the other nannies who are mostly immigrants. It becomes a case study in mental illmess, so I did not enjoy the book.

Starts off with a great story line and then veers off to who knows where! At the end I felt I had wasted my time reading The Perfect Nanny!Totally lost me

The author writes good, practical blogs about Microsoft Project on Techrepublic. I've enjoyed them, so I thought I would enjoy this book, but I was a little bit disappointed. The content doesn't go much beyond what most people with a basic knowledge of MS Project would do anyway as far as schedule development. But the part that bothered me the most was that the writing in this book is draft quality rather than publication quality. It has the typical writing errors of something that was thrown together quickly, and it does not appear that the author took the time to reread what he had written (or have someone else review it for him) before publishing it.

All in all, this book was a good deal for the price. The information was short and sweet and to the point, which is exactly what I needed and wanted. However, I couldn't see the diagrams which was a total pain since I don't have MS Project on my computer at home. I tried by viewing the diagrams on my Kindle, then seeing if they showed up any better on my Nexus 10 (they did, but only slightly), and finally, I tried reading the book on my PC and still no luck. The pictures were slightly larger but they were so blurry I could not make out a majority of the text.Again, the information was explained very well, and if I could have actually viewed the diagrams provided of what Project looked like after he entered the appropriate information I would totally rate this with 5 stars. Unfortunately, by not being able to actually see what the end result was, it left me confused many times. And since this is a Kindle only book I just couldn't give it more than 3 stars, especially since I think that should have been taken into account when the book was written.

This book is the best value that I have ever purchased on Amazon. I bought "How to Use Microsoft Project 2010" because I was looking for a tutorial on Project 2010. Since the book was only $9.99, I decided to give it a shot. WOW, was I surprised at the quality of information contained therein. The author, Dr. Andrew Makar, has assembled a great book that has all the information that I was initially looking for with a tutorial, plus a whole lot more. The book does cover how to use the program, however it also covers the strategies and tactics for managing a project. The book starts at MS Project's menu ribbon and ends with advanced topics with 10 steps in the middle.I can't say enough about this book. I recommend this to anyone that uses MS Project, regardless of your skill level.

This was a great overview and refresher and did a good job addressing the reasons behind specific choices, rather than simply focusing on the capabilities of the tool.

Very obvious contentNot worth my money. It is a very basic guide which is not worth to even call it a guide or tutorial

The book get to the point. It is very clear and easy to read. I recommend it for those who need to start planning very fast.

Microsoft Made easy is concise and easy to read. It can be used as a quick review of the subject matter. I like it. I found it very useful and I will gladly recommend it anyone interested in the subject

The ancient essayist astutely quipped, “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life” (Proverbs 4.23). That truism surfaces in story form and didactic instruction throughout Scripture, and is substantiated when raising our children, supervising employees or shepherding parishioners: what has your heart rules your life. This is the central emphasis in the newly published 224 hardback, “You Are What You Love: The Spiritual Power of Habit” by James K. A. Smith, professor of philosophy at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, accomplished author and editor. This short work appears to be a compression and reworking of his larger “Desiring the Kingdom” to make it more accessible for busy pastors and disciples. The heart of “You Are What You Love” from which flow the springs and chapters is the importance of discipleship. For Smith, discipleship has far less to do with the cognitive, and more with the God-storied, Gospel-shaped affections and perceptions where our loves and longings are aligned with Christ’s. Discipleship is “to want what God wants, to desire what God desires, to hunger and thirst after God and crave a world where he is all in all” (2); it is a “rehabituation of your loves” (19). And this rehabituation comes through the character-inscribing “rhythms and routines and rituals, enacted over and over again” that embed a heart-disposition that leans into God’s reign (Ibid.). These rhythms, routines and rituals come in habit-forming, love-molding liturgies. The greater flow of the book expounds the importance of traditional Christian liturgy, and explores rival liturgies in the marketplace, some youth ministries, vocational environments, wedding arrangements, etc. Smith’s perceptive investigation of these secular liturgies is quite insightful and handy for thinking through the ways our affections and hearts are being molded to love lesser things, alternative views of the good life, and opposing kingdoms. According to Smith, through these everyday rituals and practices “I’m covertly conscripted into a way of life because I have been formed by cultural practices that are nothing less than secular liturgies. My loves have been automated by rituals I didn’t even realize were liturgies” (45).Yet the weight of “You Are What You Love” delves into the importance of Christian liturgy in re-accustoming our loves and longings in the right direction. The church “is the place where God invites us to renew our loves, reorient our desires, and retrain our appetites” because the church is “that household where the Spirit feeds us what we need” and we graciously become a “people who desire him above all else” (65). Therefore, the church’s liturgies are highly essential for discipleship, because “Christian worship is the feast where we acquire new hungers – for God and for what God desires – and are then sent into his creation to act accordingly” (Ibid.). This premise leads the author to make a significant case for well-rehearsed and historical liturgies, rather than the new and novel. In challenging the hankering for the innovative, Smith stresses that we “keep looking for God in the new, as if grace were always bound up with “the next best thing,” but Jesus encouraged us to look for God in a simple, regular meal” (67).But the author recognizes this emphasis on Christian liturgy as a primary practice of heart-shaping, disciple-making, will evoke surprise and skepticism due to many readers’ experiences. Smith spends time divulging how many churches have re-vamped their liturgies into passive entertainment, or an expressivist endeavor. The corrective is to reclaim the gift of worship and the recognition that the main agent in worship is God himself. In classic form, worship “works from the top down….we don’t just come to show God our devotion and give him praise; we are called to worship because in this encounter God (re)makes and molds us top-down. Worship is the arena in which God recalibrates our hearts, reforms our desires, and rehabituates our loves. Worship isn’t just something we do; it is where God does something to us” (77). In being reclaimed by historic Christian liturgy, we find that worship “that restores us is worship that restories us” 95). It draws us back into God’s story, week after week, re-grounding and re-immersing us into God’s world reclamation project.“You Are What You Love” is a treatise about the heart, to help disciples learn to guard their hearts. It is insightful, instructive, investigative and inducing. This work is ideal for an elder board to read together as they think through – or rethink altogether – the why and way of Christian worship and their task of the care of the souls given to their charge. Pastors and parishioners alike would benefit greatly from probing the leaves of this manuscript. Also, church planters, missionaries, and church revitalizers will find their time spent reading this material well worth it. This is a must-read for anyone serious about church, worship, and disciple-making.Thanks to Brazos Press for providing, upon my request, the free copy of “You Are What You Love” used for this review. You Are What You Love by James K. A. Smith is a small book with large ambitions. It aims to reshape the way evangelical Christians understand discipleship, replacing their emphasis on thought with an emphasis on desire. Rather than saying, “You are what you think,” Smith urges Christians to say, “You are what you love.”For Smith, this reshaping of discipleship is not something new, but something old. Both the Bible and the pre-Enlightenment Christian tradition taught that “the center of the human person is located not in the intellect but in the heart.” For example, consider Jesus’ words in Matthew 15:19: “out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.” Or consider Augustine: “You have made us for yourself, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.”Jesus’ words reveal that the heart orients us toward evil thoughts and evil deeds. Change the heart, and the thoughts and actions will follow. Augustine’s words remind us that our heart is oriented toward a telos, an end or goal, a vision of human flourishing. Because God made the heart, only the heart that seeks His telos—the kingdom—finds rest. Every other kingdom leaves our hearts weary and restless. The problem is, how do you disciple the heart? How do you properly form human desire? Through practice, which develops habits. A cousin of mine likes to say that practice makes permanent. That’s as true for playing the piano as for developing moral character. What we do repeatedly shapes who we are.According to Smith, the practices that shape our hearts can be called “liturgies,” a churchy term for the order of worship. Martin Luther said, “Whatever your heart clings to and confides in, that is really your god.” There is a liturgy, then, that develops a good heart for the true God. There are also liturgies that develop bad hearts for false gods such as consumerism. Smith urges us to take a “liturgical audit” of our lives to make sure our practice is oriented toward the proper telos, God and His kingdom, not some lesser goal.Smith uses the term liturgies expansively. In the final three chapters of the book, he uses it to describe Christian practices in the home, at school, and in one’s vocation. The heart of his book concerns the worship practices of the gathered church, however. It is here that the Christian heart is most formed. Smith states that his book “articulates a spirituality for culture-makers, showing…why discipleship needs to be centered in and fueled by our immersion in the body of Christ. Worship is the ‘imagination station’ that incubates our loves and longings so that our cultural endeavors are indexed toward God and his kingdom.”For him, worship is about “formation” more than “expression.” It is God himself meeting us to shape us into the kind of people who do His will, not just an outpouring of our sincere feelings about Him. (Pentecostals might be tagged as “expressivists” because of their exuberant services, but it seems to me that their theology of spiritual gifts aligns with the notion that God is the agent of worship, not just its audience.) Seen this way, and mindful that practice is repetitious, Smith urges Christians to hew closely to the traditional “narrative arc” of worship—which consists of gathering, listening, communing, and sending—and to eschew “novelty.” (He’s not talking about the “worship wars,” by the way. This has to do with the structure of the worship service, not the style of its music.) That liturgy “character-izes” us, meaning, it shows us that we are “characters” in God’s story and then forms the appropriate “character” in us.Interestingly, Smith argues that Christian cultural innovators need to be rooted in Christian liturgical tradition: “the innovative, restorative work of culture-making needs to be primed by those liturgical traditions that orient our imagination to kingdom come. In order to foster a Christian imagination, we don’t need to invent; we need to remember. We cannot hope to re-create the world if we are constantly reinventing “church,” because we will reinvent ourselves right out of the Story. Liturgical tradition is the platform for imaginative innovation.”I hope I have accurately and adequately communicated the gist of You Are What You Love. It is a thoughtful, thought-provoking book that I would encourage pastors, church leaders, and interested laypeople to read. Having said that, though, I want to make two “yes, but” points.First, yes desire, but also thought. In other words, I agree with Smith that the heart is the heart of discipleship. This is a point on which evangelicals should unite, whether they are heirs to Jonathan (“religious affections”) Edwards or John (“heart strangely warmed”) Wesley. I am concerned, however, that Smith has swung the pendulum too far toward a discipleship of desire in order to compensate for the tendency in evangelicalism to swing the pendulum too far toward a discipleship of thought. This is, admittedly, an impressionistic critique. Smith is a philosopher and theologian in the Reformed tradition, after all, and the Reformed are known to be punctilious about doctrine. Still, I would’ve liked to see more on the discipleship of the mind in the book.Second, yes process, but also crisis. A process-orientation in discipleship focuses, as Smith does, on the development of spiritual habits. A crisis-orientation focuses on the necessity of decision. The characteristic forms of process-oriented discipleship are stable liturgies, the sacraments, and spiritual disciplines. The characteristic form of crisis-oriented discipleship, at least among evangelicals, is the altar call. As a Pentecostal, I would also add the call to come forward for Spirit-baptism or healing. There is little place for crisis in Smith’s book. Perhaps this is an overreaction to the crisis-orientation of evangelicalism and Pentecostalism, which often leave little room for process. Still, it seems to me that both are necessary to discipleship. Wesley was no slouch when it came to process. His followers weren’t called “Methodists” for nothing, after all. But he still stood outside the mines and called miners to repentance and faith. I didn’t see that in Smith’s book. These two “yes, buts” notwithstanding, I intend to re-read and meditate further on Smith’s book. As a Pentecostal, I disagree with certain aspects of Smith’s Reformed liturgical heritage (infant baptism, for example), even as I am challenged by the overall thrust of the book. The heart is the heart of the matter. Any discipleship that fails to take that truth into account fails to achieve its aim.
