Dylan Peters is a typical all-American boy who loves to play football, soccer, and baseball. He's a good student, too. His favorite subjects in school are reading and math. Dylan lives with his parents, his older brother, Leighton, and his younger sister, Brooke, in Olathe, a small town in the gently rolling hills of eastern Kansas. He was first diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome when he was just four years old. About the illustrator:Zachary Wendland showed not only a passion but a talent for drawing when he was only two years old. That interest has only grown over the years. In addition to his art, Zachary is an accomplished competitive gymnast. Zachary and Dylan have been friends for several years.

This book is Not for a child with mild TS. Maybe if he needs it when he is a litttle older and TS advances. Not a bad book, but geared more towards children with more TS symptoms and a little older then 8 years old. I have yet to find a book that doesn't point out medicine and being "different" (and name calling). I was hoping this was the one, but its not for us (yet). Ranitidine (Zantac) has been keeping his Tics very mild lately. I Believe keeping his anxiety down helps A LOT.

My seven year old daughter read this cover to cover as soon as I opened the package. She really enjoyed it. I read it as well and thought that it was very well written and easy for a young TS child to understand. My daughter lent it to her friend who also has TS and he loved it too.

This is a great book to get the conversation going about Tourette Syndrome with a child who has it. I could also see use in using it to help explain it to children not affected by Tourette's. While it doesn't go into a lot of syndrome related details about TS, It is easy for a child to relate to. I'm also very impressed that a young boy wrote it. Nice Jon, Dylan! :)

Just bought two copies of this, one for my son to keep at home and one for his classroom at school. Dylan does a fantastic job of explaining his experience. My son is not as reserved about his diagnosis but I still like this book as a resource for other children to understand him better.

My 11 yr old son was just diagnosed with Tourette's on top of his Asperger's and ADHD. Our local library didn't have any books on Tourette's for kids his age. Thank goodness we were able to find this book so quickly through amazon. It is short, simple and provides a wonderful introduction to the insecurities and social problems often created by Tourette's. Most important is its emphasis on the role of self-advocacy and educating others as important parts of leading a full life with TS.

We used this to describe Tourettes to my own son. He was able to recognize himself in this story immediately. So glad to have found it!

This is a really excellent book. My 7 year old daughter has TS and for the first time is understanding she is not alone. She is starting to become worried what others will think of her Tourette's and I know that Dylan's story will help her tremendously. I am going to share it with her teacher and maybe share it with the classroom, as Dylan did in the story showing his amazing courage. This book will help children accept the differences in others.Thank you Dylan and God Bless!!

How many decisions do you make based on the results of a quick google search?Whether one restaurant is better than another? Whether to see a movie? Which phone to buy?I know I have relied on random internet noise for which place to eat countless times, it's likely you have done it a few times yourself (especially considering you are reading reviews about a book on amazon).But what about when it comes time to decide on something with serious impact on your life, like how to invest your savings? Where do you look? There are plenty of people competing for your attention - and that is nothing new. Josh Brown and Jeff Macke have put together a great read on some of these characters that have appeared throughout history (long before anyone ever even heard of the internet).Here is the bottom line - If you ever caught yourself taking advice from a public financial figure on a major decision in your life - read this book. You will very likely be amazed at what these guys have put together.

One theme of the book is that there isn't enough financial news to fill the time financial news is being broadcast, so the empty space is filled with a lot of junk. Junk means people talking who don't know what they are talking about. How do they get by with it? No one is keeping score on the predictions. Who are the most popular prognosticators? The ones who talk the loudest (literally) and attack those who disagree with them in the strongest terms. How do those clowns get away with it? Again, no one is keeping score on accuracy. It's not all negative. Some good ones are mentioned. I am grateful to this book for putting me on to Barry Ritholtz, one of the good guys who thinks the accurate and honest answer to the question, "What do you think the market will do next year?" should only be "How should I know!" even if it keeps you from being invited back on the pundit shows.

They're like the new dynamic duo of finance - Brown & Macke. Brown: Real, punches hard, throws water in the face. Wakes you. Slaps you with the truth. Macke: Looks like he can kill you with his bare hands, but his story is one of rare vulnerability, gratefulness and awareness seldom observed from those in financial media. All the interviews in this book are there to strip naked those financial leaders who had big accomplishments and big losses. It showcases their humanity. I think it's such an incredibly refreshing insight into those I respect like Barry Ritholtz, James Altucher and so many more. I love Macke's story, too. This is unlike other financial books. Refreshing, unique, and I'm hoping this isn't their last venture. One of my favorite books of the year so far.

For the novice investor, this book explains why the opinions of financial pundits should be taken with a grain of salt. There is some wisdom out there such as interviews of Chanos or Buffett, but much of the other content is filler and purely entertainment without much value (stealing from the Ritholtz interview). The book also teaches us some psychology (the advantage to stating a strong opinion verses reasoned analysis) and about incentives (the reason pundits make bold predictions).For those of us that learned to limit our news intake years ago, this book provides a deeper look at what is going on behind the scenes of punditry. While this book is completely different than Back Stage Wall Street, the common thread it does share with Josh Brown's prior book is that it gives us a look behind the scenes; in this case, we get to look behind the curtain of financial television. I thought the Finerman interview was particularly interesting to see her discuss how she learned to become a pundit and get comfortable in the role considering she had no experience with punditry before being selected for the Fast Money cast.I enjoyed the stories of Jeff Macke and Henry Blodget and how they blew themselves up and subsequently made their comebacks. In the case of Macke, I didn't see his "Car People" episode and I wondered what had happened to him. In the case of Blodget, I read Business Insider from time to time and I knew a little bit of his story of redemption but the book filled in the details of how he rose to fame in the late 1990s, what happened after his career crashed how he made his comeback.This book is really two books weaved together. Macke conducts most of the interviews with the various pundits while Brown illustrates for us how silly punditry can often be. For example, humans love simplifying complex subjects into rules (which is why half the articles on the internet start with 10 rules for ...) and Chapter 15 points out how many of these rules conflict. For example, "take your losses quickly" but "don't get scared of out a good position."My suggestion for this book is that the publisher needs to put an audiobook together. If I wasn't familiar with Josh Brown through his blog and tweets, I probably would have passed on this book due to it not being available on Audible. I think this book would be perfect for the audio format.

Great book. @jeffmake and @reformedbroker do a series of interviews and share personal stories in a great book to help all people interested in expanding their investment knowledge to understand that just because someone on television/radio/internet/print say something it does not necessarily make it true. In short, NOBODY has a crystal ball but the book is obviously much deeper and well worth the read.

If you have a tendency to follow pundit types and behave according to what they say then this book will be of value to you. Famous past pundits and their ultimate fates made for an interesting and fast read. If you are a skeptic by nature then this book at best only reaffirms your beliefs. The poignant tale of the author's own crash and burn underscores the fragility of pundit status.

i was pleasantly surprised by this book. As far as talking heads go on the financial news, I've always enjoyed both Jeff Macke and Josh Brown, but that doesn't mean they can writie a book, haha. However, I thought this was not only really an enjoyable read, but also thought provoking. It lends good perspective to "take everything with a grain of salt". If you watch any CNBC at all, you should probably read this book.

He never goes anywhere without his truck!Mark Wayne McGinnis is a master storyteller and is at the top of his game with Ship Wrecked. The colorful planet and it's strange, beautiful and dangerous ecosystem are the fantastic imaginings of McGinnis' fruitful mind.From the terrors of flying serpents to the gentle climbers who live in the tree tops, Cameron meets them all during his adventures on Sang-Morang. He makes unexpected friendships and endures wet-your-pants terror, then makes friends with Art, who's a good ol' boy from Texas and a giver of sage advice on how to survive on the alien world.There are a few misspellings and grammatical errors, but nothing that greatly detracts from this amazing tale. McGinnis is true to form with Ship Wrecked. He identifies the Hero Protagonist up front then in his first person view, proceeds to tell this tale of adventure and loss, both on Sang-Morang and on Earth.I really enjoyed this book. There were portions that were slightly less interesting that others. I particularly enjoyed the interplay between the sentient Climbers and Cameron. The relationships were gentle and very touching. Something not usually seen in SciFi adventures.Read this book, but set aside a few hours where you won't be distracted because you won't want to put it down once you begin.

I picked this book up based on all the glowing 5 star reviews. I should have read the description and the author's bio more critically, I might have understood what I was getting into. Sorry, but this book was not good on many levels. Bluntly, it's amateurish. The writing is not refined; it reads like a concept draft and not a fleshed out, edited story. Grammatical errors abound. The characters are insipid when they're not cliche' or stereotypes. I read through about 25% then skimmed the rest, and then read the last chapter. It never improved nor showed any hope of improving. The ending was classic, cliche', 1950s sci-fi movie pablum. I couldn't keep reading, life is too short and I have too many unread books on my shelf. Sorry, but I cannot recommend. Even the title is misspelled. Maybe it was purposely titled this way, but "shipwrecked" is actually one word.

This is a rollicking fun tale that focuses on Cameron who helps a ship-wrecked alien, a good act that lands him aboard its spaceship with a rather demented droid that causes Cameron all sorts of trouble, even as his New York small hometown is being wrecked by a Loth creature that is an organic wrecking ball. His girlfriend Heather forms a second POV with solid, contemporaneous chapters. The action is nearly continuous, the alien galaxy layout is plausible and McGinnis' knowledge of animal behavior extends well beyond a mention of Konrad Lorenz. There is some nice solid science in several sections that I quite enjoyed. Most important is the fine third person POV narrative of Cameron, the scene shifts and the dynamic of being at risk and worried about Heather and Earth's survival. In one sense this is a fine 'small town guy makes good' story. In another sense it is a Robinson Crusoe exploration of an alien planet. And finally it is a story about relationships, human and alien. I very much enjoyed McGinnis' Scrapyard Ship series and I look forward to reading the sequel to Ship Wrecked. Highly recommended.

One hell of a ride. Couldn’t put it down. Plenty of room for sequels, with unlimited adventures. This book will captivate any and all who want to go where no man has gone before. I gave it 5 stars because has everything needed to keep you actively wanting to know what will happen next. Tons of room to grow the crew into incredible creatures. I can’t wait to head out on a new adventure with Cam, Heather, and Alice.

I was reading another book where an individual was stranded on another planet. Craving more of something like this I remembered seeing this title pop up a couple of times. Although my expectations were different. I found myself Loving this book. I am really hoping the author writes more stories in this to make a series. If you're reading my review, if you write them I'll read them. Please turn shipwrecked into a series. I would definitely check out this author's other books. Expresly after reading this fun read. As this is the 1st book of his that I have read I am looking forward Some more exciting stories.

I have read a great many of Mr.McGinnis,s books and of the many I found this to be one of his best. It grabs you and does not let go. I couldn't put it down. When I did it was the first thing that I picked up in the morning. I read it many times.I would recommend it to anyone who likes science fiction. I wish that it had a sequel. This story plot must continue and I look forward to the next one. Well worth the money.

When I read a children's book, I try to imagine what kind of read-aloud experience it would be for me and my children when they were small. My review reflects that scenario.But first... this was a tree book. When I was younger I wouldn't have found the font difficult. But I could only read a few pages at a time now. Thank goodness for the smaller paragraphs and pictures.Pictures! Why don't adult books have pictures? Even simple ones like in this book are such a blessing to tired eyes and an inspiration to the inner artist. But I don't think the pictures would have won my young critics hearts.The story, on the other hand, would have been a tough bedtime read. Thinking of how comical it would have been for Mom to be reading the words of the giant. Word of warning to parents about to try that, READ AHEAD. That way you can pronounce the words silently before exposing innocent ears to words you didn't mean to say. No, the Giant's words are all G-rated. But there are tongue twisters I know I would have fallen for. I can see my kids now rolling on the floor laughing at Mom for the mistakes.Some say this story is scary. I suppose that may be true but my children would have been delighted.The child, Sophie, and the Big Friendly Giant were great characters. The bigger giants were scary but the reader feels protected by the intelligence and common sense of BFG and Sophie.I wish, though, that the bad giants were given a chance to show they could learn to be good. All in all, this was a fun book that I was glad I got to read. Now I can watch the movie!I was so happy to be able to read the library copy of this book.

I am a ten-year old girl and I thought The BFG was a great book. I loved how some of the chapters made me laugh out loud. It was a very creative book and I always looked forward to reading it. I've read many books and The BFG was definitely one of my favorites. I decided to read The BFG because I saw an advertisement on TV for the movie. I'm glad I did! I would definitely -and no question about it- recommend it to a friend!

One of the best kids' books ever written. The BFG is a lovely creature whose demeanor and presence validates young readers' fears without pandering or being overly scary. Dahl had a great eye for the ludicrous in the world and invites kids in on the ridiculousness. A joy to read aloud, for as long as the young reader will let you! They almost always want to take it on for themselves before you want to let it go. Get your own copy, mom, dad...

This is a six-star story by one of the all-time best authors ever. My 6-year old says it is his favorite book in the world so far and has been using words like scrumdiddliumptious for the last week we have been reading it.However, the copy of the book I received new gets one start because it IS MISSING THE MIDDLE 32 pages!!! I just got to page 95 reading out loud to my 6-year old, and the next page in the paper-back is 193! The book proceeds 193 to the end including the ads for other Roald Dahl books, then goes page 129 through to the end again, including a repeat of the 193 onward section. Pages 96 through 128 are missing entirely. This kind of misprint happens sometimes, but it is such a bummer in the middle of the story! I wish Amazon could send me the kindle version so I can get back to our favorite bed-time story tonight, and eventually a replacement paperback so we can have a complete copy for our younger child when he is old enough for it!

My brother had this book when we were growing up. At the time, I would read anything I could get my hands on. I was immediately drawn in to Roald Dahl's amazing storytelling. Now that my daughter is a teen, I was telling her about this book. I was able to find it gently used on Amazon for a really good price. Now she's enjoying these stories too

Truly enjoyed the book although it took a little getting used to the giant's language. Once I got the hang of it, it was quite entertaining. My granddaughter, who is an avid reader in 2nd grade, was thrilled to get the book. She loves the giant's language and now makes up her works while playing. To funny trying to guess what the words are.

John Paul II stood across the last quarter of the twentieth century like a Collosus. His intellect was formed in modern and scholastic philosophy. The larger corpus of his thought and output consisted of many speeches, sermons, letters, interviews, etc. In the top tier of his output stand his encyclicals. In Roman Catholic tradition, encyclicals are letters from the Bishop of Rome to other bishops, to the church and to the world. Encyclicals contain teachings accepted as true and are given great deference among Catholics.Unfortuantely, much of the wisdom contained in encyclicals comes wrapped in centuries' old manners of communication, much of which are foreign to today's ear.Father Joseph Donders has provided a service to Catholics and others by rendering all of John Paul II's encyclicals into language more accessible to modern readers who are not professional theolgians. Donders points out, appropriately, that the first source always are the original encyclicals; Donders recommends having the original encyclical alongside his "translation." To enhance using this book as a refernce, Donders prepared a short Epilogue which traces some of the threads that run through the encyclicals. This makes it possible to trace the development of certain of John Paul's thought over time. This is aided also by an index of main terms and themes found in the encyclicals.

If you love JP II, all his encyclicals are here in language everyone can understand. It may not be strictly loyal to the original, but it is important that his message gets through.

Now that Pope Francis has issued his encyclical Laudato Si -- On Care for Our Common Home, it is well to review this book. Until the present day, many Church documents, even in their vernacular translations, have been in language inaccessible to the average reader. (Laudato Si, on the other hand, is not likely to receive the treatment that this book provides--it's already in everyday language!)The Preface of this book asserts that the first encyclical (Vix pervenit, on usury) appeared in 1745. (Two hundred seventy years later, is it time for an encyclical on payday loans?) However, other sources give that designation to Ubi primum (1740).Using astute editing, succinct non-convoluted phrases and sentences, and a detailed, useful index, this book neatly encapsulates most significant points. Words such as eclecticism, hermeneutics, fideism, ontologism, etc. are briefly yet clearly explained or defined.One would wish for a library of everyday-language renditions of at least the most significant encyclicals of all the popes. Admittedly unofficial and unscholarly versions could have more impact for the average reader.

This is a great book to have on hand. Pope John Paul's set of encylicals compromise a modern, comprehsensive presentation of Catholic theology. Father Donders makes these writings available to the more casual reader. Reading these encyclicals is a great way to reflect on the great pontifcate of Pope John Paul II. Highly recommended.
