Women in history!
Keith O'Brien wrote the long story of "Fly Girls" which came out a year ago. This is the much abridged and simplified story, but it leaves a lot out. The narrative is only 65 pages long, with another 28 pages of notes. In this story, O'Brien briefly portraits the five women from the original book: Ruth Elder, Ruth Nichols, Louise Thaden, Amelia Earhart, Florence Klingensmith. Klingensmith is barely mentioned and Earhart is given too much coverage. The story ends with Earhart's 1928 Atlantic voyage as the first female passenger in the "Friendship" with two male pilots. There is no mention of Louise McPhetidge Thaden as the first winner ever of the Bendix Transcontinental Air Race of 1936.O'Brien mentions how female aviators, or "Fly Girls," were used primarily as marketing and advertising. They weren't paid like the men were in aerial competitions. They weren't seen as capable as the men, and aerial heroes like Charles Lindbergh was one of many men who didn't take them seriously. The flaw in this book is that there isn't enough focus on the women's accomplishments, no feel-good narrative to give young female readers a reason to pursue a career in aviation.Such a bummer.
The subject of this book is interesting and I love how the author tries to shine a light on some lesser-known women who clearly had an impact on aviation in its budding years. Unfortunately so much of what is presented is just surface material and really does little more than identify who they were and points out some of the struggles they had. I'm not sure if there just wasn't much material to provide a more in-depth look at the women highlighted in this book or if the editors think the age level the book was intended for can't handle more information than what was presented. As an adult female reading this it's pretty obvious it was written by a man, not that I can exactly put my finger on why, it just seems to be lacking and is rather dry. This little book is a decent introduction to some women who contributed to avionic history but really provides a very brief glimpse at the women and their accomplishments.
This is a terrific biography, briefly updating young readers on the aviation histories of 5 famous women who participated in the women's air derby in 1929. Louise, Amelia, Florence, and two Ruths. We learn about their competition to cross the Atlantic first, their struggles with disapproving families, what was driving them. The book is super short and not bogged down in boring details. I believe I read it in just an hour. I found it interesting though and what it said correlated with other biographies I've read about these women. It's a subject I've read up on before. I think all schools should put this in their libraries. It's an inspiring and informative read for young ladies.
This book is written at about the fifth-grade level. My daughter is a high school student, but we both enjoyed it. In fact, I initially had her read the opening pages because they are a STELLAR example of good nonfiction writing. They lay out the catalyst clearly (initially planes were dangerous, which hampered their commercial appeal, so races were organized), with great examples and details. The women featured in the book are AWESOME role models for young people. Every classroom should have a copy of this book to engage readers and writers alike.
This was an easy and enjoyable read. I really enjoyed reading about these women who were so daring in their day. I felt it interesting that Amelia Earheart crossed the ocen in the plane as a passenger rather than the pilot. I never knew that. This is an easy read, a fast read and the reader gets a good bit of modern history.
