I think this book is quite useful, but I recommend it with a few caveats:1. This book is definitely aimed at middle class and upper middle class parents, singing the praises of mainly high end brands. In a previous edition I owned, this did not seem to be quite as much the case. Sure, they attack the Bugaboo stroller for being overpriced, but they highly recommend the only slightly cheaper Uppababy Vista. The authors do state at the beginning of the book that they want you to get good value for your money and so they don't just recommend the cheapest items. I understand that and I happen agree with that, but they don't seem to weigh cost as a terribly important factor in their ratings for individual products, which is odd for a book named "Baby Bargains." At the end of the of the book they provide an overall comparison budget to show you how much you save by going with their recommendations - but those savings are not for the products they rave about throughout the book, that's only if you go for their "good" choices, vs. "better" or "best." This book is really about shopping smarter, not necessarily about spending less. (They did tell me not to buy a diaper stacker - no problem, I won't.)2. There are many other minor issues with reviews besides price, mainly due to inconsistent updating. For one example, in their picks for audio baby monitors, they state, "Here are our picks for audio baby monitors, with one BIG caveat: how well a monitor will work in your home depends on interference sources" - and then they go on to say that they will only recommend newer DECT monitors which don't cause interference. This seems like a small thing, but it goes on throughout the book and this sloppy updating really got on my nerves after a while. If I got free updated editions, I'd let it slide, but since I'm paying full price for the latest edition, I'd like it to be fully updated.3. This edition needs serious copy editing. "Waste belt," anyone? There are also lots of incomplete sentences and parentheses are severely overused throughout. I'm not particularly picky about grammar and usage, so if I notice it, I think it must be bad enough to be distracting for a lot of other readers, too. My previous edition did not seem as poorly edited. And I think that you only should get to use the phrase "800 pound gorilla" once in a single book, thank you.4. The book feels outdated at times. Parents' fears about products made in China seems pretty marginal in today's globalized world (compared to price in today's economy), but the authors still address this in this edition as a major concern parents supposedly have in their specific reviews of nursery furniture. The authors seem to be a bit prejudiced against modern nursery furniture - given the cost of $1000 cribs made of MDF, I see their point - but some of the comments about simple nursery furniture styles being "plain vanilla" seem to reflect a preference for an earlier aesthetic, aside from price.None of these issues really detracts from the book's usefulness, but I think BB is starting to show its age a bit. I think instead of cutting and pasting new products in haphazardly, the next edition could use a refresh. With all of that being said, I really learned a tremendous amount from both editions of this book, and would still buy another edition down the road if needed. The authors do a terrific job of considering the ways that parents use products and discussing the relevant factors. They take into account various lifestyles, family sizes, and special situations like travel. You could just read the end of each section for the top recommendations, but I think the best way to use this book is to read it thoroughly and learn about the different features and decide which ones are important to you. This book helped us plan way beyond what to buy and register for - I decided I did want a fancy stroller, but had no use for a baby monitor, for example. I felt like I became an expert as a result of reading this book and can decide to spend money in a way that really makes life easier with baby. To borrow an oft-repeated phrase from the authors, bottom line: this is extremely valuable information for new parents.

I have the most recent iteration of this book and LOVED it, but I'm disappointed with this update. Let me first say that I trust the reviewers - I have a 7 month old - much of what we use with her is based on what the 2015 edition recommended, and we've been satisfied with our decisions. This book has dramatically cut back on the categories and number of products it reviews (280 pages versus 596). It only provides guidance on the 'top' recommendations whereas the 2015 version provided in-depth reviews on the bestsellers within the industry. Instead, this version directs you to the baby bargains website for full reviews of more products. Unfortunately, the website is terrible. And regardless - I bought this book largely BECAUSE I have an infant and want a one-stop resource in book format - I don't have time to navigate between tangible book and webpage. I'd also like to see this book address recent innovations in the market such as the Keekaroo Peanut diaper changer (i.e. is it a bargain?). And finally, this book really needed a copy editor because there are way too many distracting typos.I really, really hope the writers take this feedback into account because this series has been such an important resource to so many new and soon-to-be families. I will continue to recommend this brand because it fills an important niche in the market for first time parents. However, it can do better.

I love Baby Bargains and have recommended it to everyone I know since I had my first baby in 2007. I bought this newest version for a friend and noticed it looked much smaller...when I compared it to the 2013 version, 2017 had 280 pgs compared to 632 in 2013! What happened to all of that extra info? Disappointing!!!

As a new Mom, I appreciate that this is a "one-stop shop" for understanding different baby products.I like that it has "cheat sheets" for each section with the key things to look for in that type of product - for example a carseat with EPS or EPF foam, or a high chair with a removable tray. These are things I simply had NO knowledge of before and this was a quick way to break it down for me so that I could decide what it was I was looking at when bombarded with ads or in massive baby department stores. I liked that it rated items in different price ranges - a few in detail and then a larger group of products with a star-rating system on dozens of criteria. It also did a fair job of explaining what you *actually* might need, and gives you "permission" to skip some of the pricey or gimmicky stuff.I do think they could have included more budget saving tips - it seemed absurd to me that a "baby bargains" book still had strollers and cribs over $1000 each. Yes, there were lower priced options, but dang - if I picked up a "bargain" book I certainly am not considering spending +$2000 on just the crib and stroller!

I'm only on page 19 and there are already two links for freebies and deals that don't work at all. Also, the "7 Commandments" of bargain baby shopping tell you not to shop at stores with "baby" in the name because things will be 30% cheaper... but a few pages later the book lists the "best baby stores in America", almost all of which have the word "baby" in the name! I think that maybe after editing this book to update it, some older links and information weren't taken out. The result is a lot of contradicting or missing information... I don't even know if it's worth going through this whole book.

Review

“I highly recommend Tinkerlab to any parent with young children! I read the book in one sitting (it was that well written) but know I will be referring back to it for years as I encourage my own daughters’ tinkering, experimenting, and creative development.”—Jean V’ant Hul, author of The Artful Parent   “I love Tinkerlab! This book is a glorious invitation for wonder and delight. The teacher in me respects the approach to creativity, process, and self-directed exploration. The mom in me is charmed by the easy-access of materials and projects. Fun! Fun! Fun!”—Lynn Brunelle, author of Pop Bottle Science“Being playful and creative is such a vital necessity in today’s world!  As an arts educator and parent of a curious four-year-old, I greatly value and embrace the ‘tinkering mindset’ at the core of Doorley’s Tinkerlab.  What an exceptional resource for all ages as we work to include more creative experiences and explorations in our lives.”—Michael Murawski, PhD, Director of Education & Public Programs at the Portland Art Museum and Founder and Editor at ArtMuseumTeaching.com

I have somewhat followed the authors blog for a while now, but when I decided to purchase this book I thought it would just be a simple 55 projects. It is much more than that. With several variation to each of those 55 projects which appeal to young children as well as teen-age boys and adults, I was so very impressed as I read it cover to cover in one day. As an early childhood educator I feel it is difficult to find fabulous books such as this one, which has lots of appeal and some very creative projects with some unique spins on the variations. My seven year old is fascinated, as is my 22 year old son. Lots of great ideas for everything from making marks with crayons and markers but also delves into simple machines, robotics, electronics and some really unique hands on art experiences that are not widely published in the typical make and do books. Love the drawing machine that kids can construct with a simple motor, tape and markers, the geodes inside egg shells, the lava lamp, the photography ideas and the ideas to make art in nature (Which doesn't have to be permanent, still respectful, and fun even for others to enjoy after you're gone). My 7 year old's first project was the straw rockets, and he was hooked on this book. Fabulous ideas for the tiniest of tots to teachers who are not easily impressed, such as me. If I could give it 6 stars I would have. Beautiful photography and simple guidelines throughout the book make this the go to for many hours of fun, unplugged creativity well worth the cost of this great find! Well Done Tinkerlab!

This book gives me ideas for how to give my kids a fun childhood, and as we do the projects, I feel like I'm back in my own childhood!Cloud dough! Who would have thought it would feel SO good to play with oil and flour? Adding the essential oil in it is an extra bonus that will someday be a trigger for the memory. We'll smell lavender in 15 years and my son will say, "remember when we used to make cloud dough and I spilled it all over the floor and then dumped out even more when you went to get a towel?" Yes, I remember.

You’ve probably seen the pictures on Pinterest and maybe other social media, but perhaps didn’t realize the activities were Tinkerlab. What is Tinkerlab? Maybe you have heard about Tinkerlab classes or activity events in your area. What is the difference between Tinkerlab and loose parts? Minnesota even has Teen Tinker Lab events, and I’m sure events and classes are available in many states. If you want to know more, this book will make it easy to set up this kind of learning in your own home or classroom as a special event for for indoor recess. The book has 55 activities for children to explore their world with creative experiments with easy to find materials.

This book is AMAZING and has transformed my home into a child-friendly place to create and tinker. I tentatively set up a Tinkerlab in an area in my kitchen, and even though it takes up space, it is space well-used. What a valuable asset this is to our home! I like things to be tidy and organized, so I had to find a way to make this creative space work for my personality. I bought a three-tiered turquoise cart on wheels from IKEA, a customizable 3-door cabinet/TV stand from IKEA, and a variety of "Coloration" containers from the Container Store to house the materials. I also got a couple TV trays from IKEA to periodically set out "invitations" in a contained space. My kids (and I) are now constantly creating, and it looks neat and tidy after our project is complete.

This book is absolutely fabulous! I started integrating Tinkerlab activities into my kindergarten classroom this fall and I am loving the creativity this is inspiring in my students! Rachelle Doorley is such an inspiration! The ideas in the book are well laid out and easy to follow. I have gifted this book to a few friends also to use at home with their 3-6 year-olds and they have also been enjoying it. A great find and a lovely way to get kids thinking in creative ways regularly!

Tinkerlab is one of the first blogs I followed and it remains a constant source of inspiration. I'm thrilled to see Tinkerlab in print! The projects in this book cover a wide variety of subjects but the guiding premise, that kids should make and create, remains strong and clear. I love how Rachelle Doorley walks you through how to set up your home for creative success. I also enjoyed reading the essays from seasoned professionals in the educational and professional world. This book is not to be missed for kids and grown-ups who love to create and tinker!

Great little book with all sorts of creative ideas to keep toddlers busy! I love all the beautiful pictures, as well, though it makes me wish I had a more artistic eye and space in my house for these kinds of activities. =) There are suggested adjustments to the "experiments" for the younger toddler crowd, and my 2½ year old daughter has been enjoying various projects from this book for the last 6 months since I bought it!

I love this book. There are instructions for specific activities to set up and do with your children, but more valuable to me are the general guidelines and encouragement offered on how to create a home where creativity can happen authentically and spontaneously.

I was initially disappointed by this book, though now I am only slightly negative. In the book, the author provides a good overview of how you can use Delphi for .NET and ASP.NET. I did learn a lot about .NET and am better prepared for the migration. However, this looks and reads like an editted C# book. Except for a few pages (literally one chapter), there is very little about Delphi. The examples are in Delphi, which helps with the understanding, but the author uses the Microsoft .NET libraries and DOES NOT USE EVEN ONE of the Borland specific libraries like VCL.NET, etc. in his examples.Overall, an educational book, but not what I was looking for.

Item Ok - Fast Deliver.

Delphi for .NET Developer's Guide by Xavier Pacheco is the first book about the new generation of Borland Delphi development environment. Delphi 8 is the first version of Delphi that allows programmers to harness the power of Microsoft .NET framework, and bring productivity to the new levels through advanced technologies and application lifecycle management. The collaboration of author and several contributing writers enabled this book to bring fresh and relevant information in print quickly. I enjoyed this format while reading the book; the mix of styles brought in by different people makes reading moving. At the same time it is in no way disconnected, and the well-structured set-up is definitely felt through the chapters.Seeing how fast this book was brought to the market, some minor discrepancies and misprints are excusable, do not lower the technical value of the book, and can be overlooked. I haven't noticed any serious mistakes. The book includes a concise introduction to .NET and to the Delphi language, as well as the more important features of the new Delphi for .NET environment. Such subjects as Assemblies, GDI+ programming, Cross Platform demonstration, Reflection, and memory management are discussed. Most developers will find chapters on .NET collections, strings and multithreading extremely useful. Interoperability with unmanaged applications, and WinForms programming are also covered.Multitier development is mostly discussed in the context of web services and .NET remoting. Which are very powerful concepts of the new framework that will definitely progress in the future.Unfortunately, there are no chapters on the Borland VCL.NET. However, the accompanying CD includes a copy of the Delphi 6 Developer's Guide by Xavier Pacheco in PDF format, which discusses VCL, the ancestor of VCL.NET in great detail. VCL is a time proven extremely well structured extendable library of visual and non-visual components that allows building business class applications in very rapid and clean manner.Back to the Delphi for .NET Developer's Guide. Out of the several data access technologies available with Delphi, the book discusses the one that fits the .NET framework the best: ADO.NET. This topic is well covered from different sides. There is also a chapter on the Borland Data Provider - the methodology that allows better data connectivity design time support.ASP.NET is one of the most exciting features of .NET. Built on top of ISAPI frameset, it allows development of powerful web applications and interactive web sites. ASP.NET uses code behind concept of dynamically loaded libraries written in full fidelity .NET languages such as Delphi 8. At the same time ASP.NET provides developers with all the plumbing necessary for scalable session management, statefull and stateless execution, caching, as well as authentication and authorization mechanisms.ASP.NET is arguably the best-covered subject in the book that surly deserves the attention. As far as improvements go, perhaps, I would enjoy seeing chapters on cryptography, regular expressions, but at 861 or so pages, this book is definitely a fundamental work, that is a good read and works well as a handy reference.

Xavier has continued his excellent Delphi Developers Guide tradition into the .NET space, but don't let the title fool you. This is first and foremost a book on .NET software development, using Delphi for .NET for the examples and to demonstrate the concepts seasoned programmers need when moving to .NET. This book is not a simple "here's how to drop a component onto a form" type of introduction to programming. It is written so as to not insult the intelligence of the seasoned programmer, yet is written in such an easy to read approachable manner that intermediate programmers will easily pick it up and beginning programmers will easily figure out what they need to research when they go to the more introductory texts that already exist elsewhere for Delphi. Xavier has included a nice variety of topic matter, assisted by a plethora of contributing authors. There's even a chapter on using Delphi for .NET with Mono! (How's that for being up to date?) Other chapters cover the newest changes to the Delphi language, writing database applications using ADO.NET, as well as ASP.NET and a variety of very useful topics like multithreading in .NET as well as memory issues and collections, and .NET remoting. The writing is top-notch and very readable. This is a book you can take with you on the plane, or sit next to the fireplace, and actually read. If you are a software developer that has been sitting on the fence in regard to .NET, you owe to yourself to read this book and use it as your guide to .NET and Delphi for .NET.

I just wasn't impressed with the book. I'm an experienced Delphi developer and I puchased this book thinking it would show me how to leverage my Delphi skills and learn how to do things in .NET. What a disappointment. After a chapter on using the graphics routines comes a section on Mono then off to a discussion of databases. Not much on creating normal forms apps and many of the code examples are in C# or VB. Even some of the sample Delphi code was for version 7, not even .NET examples. I really wanted this book to get me ready for .NET and instead I merely learned some about the graphics routines and file IO. I wanted more from the standpoint of you're a Delphi developer here's how to work with .NET.Found a bunch of typos also, so I had to really study the book to see what was meant. In one case it says you'd expect to see an 'A' as the result but what you really get is an 'A' - not very useful from a learning standpoint.

If you're into, or getting into, .NET programming with Delphi, this is a good reference. I am a professional programmer, and Delphi is one of 4 languages I use on a regular basis. I bought this book, and Cantu's book, about two months ago to ease into ASP.NET from 12 years of VCL programming. Both books are very helpful, but my Pacheco book is way more dog-eared than the Cantu book, so that says something right there.
