Excellent overview of the early Cristianities---proto-orthodox and its many heretical cousins.I've read 10+ Ehrman books, another 10+ historical/critical bible studies and dozens of pieces of atheist literature. I think those reads assisted me in fully enjoying and understanding this book; my previous reading experiences "greased the rails" for this book. Perhaps you won't need that assist, but I'm glad I had it.Again, this is MANDATORY reading for a person who wants the true story, rather than faith's cockeyed version.Ehrman doesn't say it, but he certainly suggests that the following idea is true: Today, no one practices the religion practiced by Jesus, and Jesus never practiced any of the religions practiced today. Christians today are generally clueless regards their roots, but through no fault of Ehrman's. He cannot force people to read well-researched and authoritative texts.Score another point for Ehrman on the playing field of religious research geared toward the common man.Please write another, while I track down the dozen-or-so Ehrman books I've yet to read.Thank you, Bart.

The book was content-heavy. Not a difficult read, but I did need more breaks than when I read a couple of other Ehrman's books, such as, Misquoting Jesus and How Jesus Became God. Sometimes books have what I call, "filler" in them that take up your time but have no meaningful content. This book had no "filler". It was jam-packed with information about the different sects of Christianity--Ebionites, Marcionites, Gnostics, etc... It explained what each Church Father believed was the "right" way to view Jesus' divinity and what each one of them considered heretical. The pacing of the book was steady and maintained my interest all the way to the end. Excellent book.

I saw this book recommended by Matt Dillahunty of The Atheist Experience. It's a well written book, unbiased and doesn't come across as trying to undermine Christianity. Instead, it gives voice to early Christian groups that were sincere and trying to understand Jesus' messageb but who had very different interpretations than the group that formed the new testament.I'm no longer Christian, and the book helped me to see the early Christian groups in a more understanding and positive light , as they sincerely looked to grasp and interpret the teachings associated with Jesus. I found it very helpful to see that the interpretations and theology that's in the new testament are just one group's take on things. Other sincere (and very sizable) early Christian groups had very different interpretations based on the same teachings from Jesus. These groups were reframed by the group that won as small in size and representing some wild, heretical perspective; this book corrects this and shows the truth. Interestingly, I thought of how my rejection of what's in the new testament may very well be rejection of a specific group's misinterpretation of Jesus & that I could find alignment with other early Christian groups. It also served to resolve a question of mine with respect to the historicity of Jesus (so many different and sincere groups with different interpretations and their own Scriptures make me fall squarely on the view that Jesus was a historical figure).

For any one interested in the history, authenticity of the New Testament books, this is a must reading. The author successfully makes the reading interesting and, more importantly, very readable. There are occasions of repetitiveness but aside from that I highly recommend the book but it needs to be approached with a great deal of openness and an absolute lack of religious bias. This is not a book for the dogmatically religious person for whom any writing that deviates from a perceived perspective is, a priori, false and inaccurate. The author gave me a wonderful sense of the inner conflicts and dynamics that early Christianity had to endure before becoming the standard and established religious dogma. It also gives an invaluable perspective on the various prejudices and struggles that religious leaders had to encounter in order to retain their views of historical truths as they interpreted the existing documents at the time. I personally could not put the down and was enthralled by it. Highly recommended.

One of Ehrman’s best, I think. Thought-provoking and speculative, yet grounded, this book explores alternative early Christianities before “Proto-Orthodox Christianity” won the battle and shoved the rest aside. You’ll read about the Ebionites, the Marcionites, Gnosticism, and the evolving orthodox church. Ehrman puts all on even ground so that each has an equal voice, because recent discoveries such as the Dead Sea Scrolls have proven just how diverse Christian practices really were back in the first and second centuries.Ehrman doesn’t mince words when he discusses the “forgeries” both in and out of the Bible, so do be aware the topic gets plenty of ink. This does lead to some interesting conversation, though. The Secret Gospel of Mark, the Pastoral letters in Paul’s name, and the Gospel of Thomas come under scrutiny. Small wonder that in the battle for supremacy between the various Christian branches, the claim for apostolic succession played a central role. Quickly in orthodox church tradition, our 27 books of the New Testament are all tied directly to the apostles or companions, while other Christian writings are denounced as inauthentic.So what are the repercussions of the victory of proto-orthodox Christianity? How has our world been shaped by this? Ehrman feels the significance of this victory can scarcely be overstated. Christianity would surely have no doctrine of Christ as both fully divine and human, and of course no Trinitarian doctrine. Ya’ know that scraggy elderly guy at the gym who listens to CDs on a disc man as he trudges on the treadmill? Well, sometimes that codger is listening to college courses that eminent professors have recorded for The Teaching Company. And over the years, these courses have included “Between Cross and Crescent”, which examines Jewish culture and society from its rabbinical foundations in antiquity to Spinoza; and “Jewish Intellectual History: 16th to the 20th Century.” Each of these courses, by the way, has 24 30-minute lectures, takes a mostly chronological approach to a vast and complex subject, and is taught by the estimable David Ruderman, who is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. These are excellent courses and (a tip ‘o the hat to Doyle Dane Berbach) you don’t have to be Jewish to love Levy’s rye bread…With this as background, I’d say that David N. Myers, also a distinguished professor, attempted the impossible as he wrote “Jewish History: A Very Short Introduction”. You see, books in the “Very Short Introductions” series are limited to roughly 150 pages. And this is simply not enough space to do justice to this enormous subject.In his attempt, Myers writes a book with five chapters and an introduction. For me, the best of these was the introduction, where Myers raises two basic questions. These are: “Why have the Jews survived through the ages while other civilizations and religions have come and gone?” And what role has hatred played in the preservation of Jewish religion, culture, and identity? The short answers to these questions are:o Survival. In contrast to other ethnic groups, Jews moved. And when they did so, they acculturated to their new societies, adopting the language, dress, and some of the customs of their new lands. The effect was that the Jews constantly renewed themselves and enriched their culture through selective assimilation.o Hatred. This often forced the Jews to move. And it prevented the full assimilation and absorption of the Jews in other cultures.Meanwhile, the five chapters of this short book follow particular themes through the course of Jewish history. Sometimes, this works well. For example, the chapter “Numbers” follows the ups and downs in the worldwide Jewish population, which has fluctuated over the centuries due to pogroms, forced migrations, and epidemics. Likewise, the chapters “Politics” and “Perceptions” were illuminating. In “Politics”, Myers discusses the risky but unavoidable medieval strategy of Jews aligning with the interests of monarchs. Likewise, “Perceptions” examines the qualities gentiles ascribed to Jews and the purposes these ascriptions served. I must say, however, that this approach does generate some overlap.At the same time, this “Very Short Introduction” brims with qualifications. This, of course, is inevitable since the Jews are amazingly diverse and strongly advocate for different principles and cultural styles. There are, for example, Court Jews and Marxists, urbanites and kibbutzniks, Reform Jews and Haredi, and so on, and so on. This generates many paragraphs of “but-on-the-other-hand” observation.Anyway, a good try; but the subject overwhelms the limits of the VSI form.

First off, what a pretty cover. I love the series. There was some discussion on false messiahs. Interesting story about living among Muslims. The VSI has a book on the Old Testament. There is a book a highly recommended called Antisemitism a very short introduction. I love the romantic movements effects on Judaism.

The series is designed to provide readers a short, (generally 150 pages or less) stimulating, and accessible guide to a new subject in a way that meets high standards of scholarship. I have enjoyed reading several volumes in this series on subjects I found both familiar and unfamiliar.David Myers' book, "Jewish History: A Very Short Introduction" (2017), the 526th in the series, presents a special challenge. The book attempts to introduce Jewish history, with its diversity and complexity in both time and breadth, in a challenging and informative way without falling into stereotypes or preconceived notions. Virtually every element Myers discusses, from the Bible, the Jews in the Middle Ages, to the contemporary state of Israel, and much more, has been the subject of extensive and controversial study. For all its brevity, Myers' book is insightful. The Sady and Ludwig Kahn Professor of Jewish History at UCLA, Myers is the author of several large books about Jewish history and the editor of ten additional volumes on the subject.At the outset, Myers states the theme of his study as "[w]hy have Jews survived through the ages while other civilizations have come and gone?". Myers properly declines to give a supernatural answer to this question. Instead, he gives a broad, nuanced answer which focuses on two elements. The first element is the characterization of the Jewish people as a "people in movement" throughout their long history. Jews have been in many places throughout their history and have had the gift of adaptability and of acculturating themselves to broadly different environments. The second element is the prevalence, to varying degrees, of dislike for the Jewish people. Jews have had to define themselves against various forms of anti-Semitism and this attempt has given them cohesion and a foil against complete assimilation into a host country.In developing his theme, Myers does not offer a linear, chronological account beginning with the Bible and ending with the early 21st Century. He develops his subject using five organizing themes each of which moves back and forth through various time period. The book thus has a patchwork approach but it explores Myers' basic position from a variety of perspectives and avoids the superficiality that would be the inevitable result of a linear history in a very short book.The themes that Myers develops as "major animating forces of the Jewish past" are Names, Numbers, Cultures, Politics, and Perceptions, each of which is explored in a chapter. Each subject is stated in the plural to emphasize the diverse character of Jewish experience. The book focuses inevitably on Jewish identity, but a wise lesson of the book is that there are many inter-related Jewish identities and not one. The various chapters and concepts show different ways Jews have seen themselves and been seen through time and space. Anti-Semitism and persecution receive a great deal of attention as they must. But the book also shows the complex relationship between Jews and their host countries, both Christian and Muslim, in which Jews and their neighbors often lived in an uneasy harmony and in which Jews received a measure of protection from the political and religious leadership of the places in which they lived. The book offers a nuanced account in the way it shows both acculturation/assimilation and anti-Semitism as contributing to Jews sense of themselves and to their survival over millennia.The book shows the forces of integration and separateness at work beginning with the Babylonian Exile. I particularly liked the discussion at various places in the book of the Greek Jewish philosopher Philo who in his writings attempted an early synthesis between Greek thought and Jewish Biblical texts. Among other things, Myers offers good if brief discussions of Spinoza and of the later Enlightenment thinker, Moses Mendelssohn.In the chapter of the book dealing with politics, Myers offers competing communal and individualistic pictures of contemporary Jewish identity. He describes the individualistic picture, following other scholars, as the issue of the "sovereign self". Myers explains that the "sovereign self" is"the typical Jewish individual who decides on her life path without excessive fealty to the weight of the past or to established communal institutions. This form of 'sovereignty' rests on the proposition that there are many portals, not just one, through which to enter into Jewishness-- and that the decision rests entirely in the hands of the individual."Myers contrasts the "sovereign self" view, which tends to be rooted in the United States with a communal view of Jewish identity, which tends to be rooted in Israel. He points to both the tension and the interrelationship in these two competing views of Jewish identity I found the discussion valuable.For all its brevity, Myers' book is well-documented and includes a good bibliography for readers wishing to explore the subject or aspects of the subject further. This book became irresistible when a large, well-illustrated article about it appeared in the New York Times ("Inside the Black Budget" by William J. Broad) on April 1. The book came in the mail today. It is very good. Folks who are interested in the subject might really like it, but, as the spread in the Times indicates, there is a general audience also for a look behind the green door if the presentation is accessible. In the case of this modest book, it is small in size and just right in length. The author, Trevor Paglen, states that this book is not intended to be a reference for historians and with that important caveat, I recommend it highly. Mr. Paglen, a candidate for a PhD in geography at UC Berkeley, treats the subject with respect and seems to have enjoyed himself, as do the patch designers and the people who approved those designs. His next book (and his thesis), says the Times, is about secret bases and "undisclosed locations" in the US. It is called Blank Spots on the Map: The Dark Geography of the Pentagon's Secret World and will be published by Dutton next February (2009). While you're waiting, have a look at Top Secret Tourism: Your Travel Guide to Germ Warfare Laboratories, Clandestine Aircraft Bases and Other Places in the United States You're Not Supposed to Know About by Harry Helms, which is also recommended.

I found myself gaping as I read this book, by turns astonished that classified personnel could get away with having a sense of humor on the job and cackling madly at the inside jokes. There appears to be a rich language of symbolism in the patches' patterns, and many an afternoon could be whiled away by the reader attempting to piece it together. I've already recommended this book to several friends, and I can't recommend it highly enough to anyone curious about military heraldry or black projects.

What a great book! If you are a conspiracy nut, military historian, believe in aliens, collect military artifacts, are into aviation, or any of the above, this may be a really fun book for you!This is not a dense or didactic book, but rather, it is a picture book with a paragraph or two about each entry. A good supplement to a more serious collection, or a unique coffee table book.

I love this fascinating little book. It is a tiny fact-filled volume, with a patch from a different top-secret test flight or satellite reconnaissance unit on each page. Where possible, the author describes what the patch symbolism represents and where the unit was located.This is a thrilling little book for anyone that was involved in these or similar "black" programs themselves, and maybe even more intriguing for civilians. Not the dimensions of the book - it is very small; the patches are photographed at approximately life size and each page is not much bigger than each patch.This book focuses mainly on Air Force and NRO secret units. I'd love to see one of these for military intelligence and NSA units.

The Black Projects that are covered in this book are those that you would expect, not the ones I was hoping for. Almost all of the patches are from now declassified projects that took place between 1980-2000 and they are vastly in the field of aeronautics. Trevor Paglen gets about as close as any one could I suppose without being destroyed, and for that I respect his work. I guess I was hoping for more glimpses, more of a deeper overall survey of the special projects world. I certainly had my hopes too high for such a tiny book with such a narrow focus. If he had added more conjecture to entertain the reader he would have reduced its believability. This book is worth reading if you can borrow a copy (it will take you a couple hours to read), but it's only worth buying if you are a military historian or are an avid patch collector.

A great summary coffee table book that introduces the esoteric symbols, language & mythology of the top secret black world. Patches of squadrons that, supposedly don't exist, a lot are some that have been declassified, but a great view into the cult ure :)

The book itself is alright, the patches which are supposed to represent "black op" projects are well presented and each has a story to go along with them. The problem is that there is no way independently verify the stories.I recently had the opportunity to listen to a presentation by the author, it was based on this book but also covered his other books (which IMHO are much more interesting and easier to independently verify) which were written on government rendition programs and secret bases.The book overall is good but the stories sound more like vet stories you would hear in the VFW over a couple of pints.

This is a fun and unique book and worth picked up for any patch or military enthusiast. This in the only books I have seen written on military morale patches. The cover has an actual embroidered patch affixed to it. It is a bit out of date and deals almost exclusively with Air Force unit's, the patches are good and the write ups are pretty well done. I would like to see a second version and would love to see this as the first in a series. But I don't know if the military patch collector is a big enough demographic to support it. That said if you find this at all fascinating or interesting its worth picking up.

 I'm absolutely in love with the Flower Color Guide. I pre-ordered it and was literally counting down the days until it arrived. It's really informative and simply beautiful. It's my favorite coffee table book! Thinking of getting one for every flower lover I know.

I don't care if you're a professional floral designer with years of experience under your belt and thorns under your fingernails or an aspiring insta-inspired florist with an embarrassing amount of flower-related queries in your google search history. . . you need this book, it's perfect.I'm the first variety of florist, the thorn-y kind with a design studio and bride clients, but I wish I had this book when I first started . . . hell I wish I had it last week. Its perfection lies in its practicality, simplicity, and beauty. I’ll use it daily. Whether it’s to show a bride an example of a particular bloom, to check seasonality (“I’m sorry Claudia, you can’t have peonies for your January wedding, see? Right there. Darroch and Michael say so, it’s out of my control” - end scene), or to simply find inspiration. I’m not waxing poetic when I say this is my absolute favorite flower book and the only one I’ll hands-down recommend. They have masterfully created the design book for designers. . .however, the pictures are so beautiful I’d recommend it to anyone with eyes.

I work in the event industry and the Putnams' new book has been a lifesaver in our office when we're trying to identify specific seasonal florals we'd like to see in our event decor. I really wish this book existed when I was planning my wedding.My OCD side is very pleased with how the flowers are organized by color - if you follow them on Instagram, it has also been really helpful watching the "Flower of the Day" series where they show how they incorporate each of these flowers into their arrangements.It's the perfect size to stand out against my giant coffee table books and then toss into my bag when I need to bring it to work.These make great birthday/Christmas/housewarming/Thank You gifts to other friends in the wedding or events industry in general, but I also recently gifted it to a friend who loves to entertain in her home and she LOVED it!Highly, highly recommend!

So excited to get this book! It’s the perfect handheld guide to flowers. The best part... ITS ORGANIZED BY COLOR! Each specimen photographed has the proper name of the flower, the season it is available and it’s use in an arrangement ie focal, face, filler. Brilliant book.
